slippery steps

Inherited a 20X40 inground concrete pool built sometime in the 70's, meaning it came with the house and now we have to take care of it.
Done an OK job being totally clueless about pool maintenance.
Last fall, had the pool drained, sanded, acid washed, etc. and painted with epoxy paint.
Looks OK, except some leaves and stems dried in the paint that are still there.
Pool is now extremely slippery and am worried someone is going to slip on the steps.
Done alot of research and have come up with nothing that I can do to remedy this.
Bought a bath mat and cut it to fit the steps but it doesn't stay for more than 10 minutes.
Is there anything out there that anyone knows about to affix to the stairs without draining the pool again?
Any help is appreciated.
