I read in my instruction manual that you can't run the swg while the pool is occupied. I have read on here that people suggest running it during the day though so I am confused. is it just the brand? I have an Intex Krystal Clear.

Intex does not recommend running it while the pool is occupied because it is a "portable" system. Since it may or may not be grounded or bonded, there is a small chance of electrical shock, just like operating any other electrical device near water. You should plug it into a GFCI outlet if possible.
Many of the cheaper pool pumps are not rated for operation while pool is occupied either.
