It works either way but as Casey & 257WbyMag eluded to, if you use an adaptor plate the basket in the skimmer stays in place to catch the big stuff. Otherwise you have to remove the skimmer basket and depend on the pump strainer baasket to catch it. Being a belt & suspenders kinda guy I like having both in place.
Some pools have a dedicated vacuum port just below the skimmer. In that case you just plug the vacuum hose into the port. If I had that type I'd add a leaf canister to the hose to catch the big stuff.
