I had my 24' above ground pool closed this past week. They pulled out the ladder and did all the winterizing. I forgot I had purchased a vinyl mat to go under the ladder which they didn't pull out. Are you still able to get it out of there? If not, I doubt it will be a problem. Perhaps hide algae as spring weather warms the water, but just sitting in there doesn't seem to be particularly risky to me.

Yeah, I could loosen the cable and pull back the cover and see if I could scoop it out. No way am I jumping in! 
But if it's ok to leave it, I'll just pull it out in the spring and clean it and whatever grows under it.

I leave my steps and mat in all year, started doing it 3 years ago after i got tired of walking around wedding cake steps in my basement for 8 months.
I was a little concerned the first time but i've never had an issue doing this and they both make it thru the winter fine.
