I saw a controller that activates an irrigation style solenoid valve to close it and divert flow to the panels. Is there any advantage / disadvantage to this type of valve as opposed to the typical 3 way automatic valves?
I'm not sure, but I've thought if using one of these myself. Only thing holding me back is the innability to find a 1.5" or 2" valve locally. Have you found one?

Yes, I can get them locally at an irrigation store. Actually, it was several years ago that I saw them, but I don't know why they would not have them now. I've got 5 of them on irrigation system - all 1.5"
Funny, yesterday I was thinking the same thing you wrote about in your other post. Getting a cheap digital thermostat, unsoldering the thermistor and embedding it in the rubber solar mat, then using that to control a solenoid valve. I'll be using the solar all winter, but just don't want the water going through the panels when it is cloudy and cold.
