weight to hold ladder

Last year I used a 50lb bag of sand in a giant ziploc bag to hold my ladder in place. Getting that in and out of the pool was very hard for me, plus the bag broke open, blah...I was wondering if it would be ok to use 2 20lb dumb bells, the plastic ones? I saw a thread about making weights using PVC and cement, but I am not that handy, don't have tools, I'm lucky if I can change a light bulb.

How about empty bleach jugs or milk jugs filled with sand? That's within your mechanical abilities, isn't it? Gives you a nice handle to ziptie them with and each one should be light enough to handle easily.

Yes that is within my mechanical abilities! I saw this in another thread and there was a mention of adding bleach to the sand in the jug?

So pour dry sand into jugs, then add some bleach (1 cup?) put cap on and I am ready to go?

Not even a cup. A capful in a gallon of water is huge. Add the bleach, fill with sand, then add water to the top. Or add some water before the sand. Whatever. Just wear old clothes in case things get messy.
