I am beside myself with measuring CYA.
I am still getting the hang of drop based testing (the TF100, natch), after years of strips. FC, CC, T/A, CH. No problem. However, the CYA test has me pulling my hair out. Over the last two weeks, I've measured CYA at values ranging from 65 to over 100. I'm already into my reagent refills. Ugh. I've tried many of the tips I picked up from searching the forums: pour the sample back into the mixing bottle to measure again, wiggle the bottom of the tube to be sure the detect the dot's motion, do the test outdoors in indirect daylight... {sigh} I just don't feel confident that I REALLY know how much CYA is in there.
My water is 98% cleared up after nearly a week at shock level, but it still looks dull. I'm wondering if my CYA really is around 100, and therefore I wasn't really shocking the way I thought I was. I'm considering a 20% dump and refill (to get from 100 to 80 ppm CYA), which I figure is about a 10" drop in water level based on my fiberglass pool dimensions. Is this safe to do in one fell swoop? I don't believe my water table is particularly high at my house (my sump pump rarely runs, unless there are recent, heavy rains).
I'm TRYING... I really am... sheesh.
