Why is there no backwash on my DE filter?

I have an inground, plaster, 30K gallon pool with a Sta-Rite System 2 Modular DE filter. It was installed without backwash capability (not even the lever on the top to knock some DE off). So every time I want to clean my filter, I need to dismantle it.
That is not too much of a problem because it's a one piece mesh and I have the process down so it takes half an hour to 45 minutes. But why wouldn't a filter be set up with a backwash valve? And should I change it?
Thanks,
Steve

I don't know why they designed the this filter without a backwash or bump to help clean the filter. According to the user's manual it is not designed to work with a backwash valve, so you couldn't add one to it.
