Because somewhere I came to believe that good TA was the key to most everything else.

Far, far and away the most important aspect of pool maintenance is adequate chlorine. The other parameters, including TA, have to be in a range of acceptability.

Excessive CYA is probably the next big issue but they all pale in comparison to inadequate chlorine levels.

Might talk to your friend about doing some borates once you have the CYA where you want it... Otherwise things look pretty reasonable.
