Can I divorce my skimmer?

My Intex skimmer keeps giving me big headaches. If I leave filter running without checking, it seems to have a mind of it's own. The wind was blowing very strongly today and I guess the skimmer was blown out of place. When I returned, I had to backwash and rinse the sand filter. I have mosquito netting over entire pool, so do I really need the skimmer part that floats?

the skimmer is just a convenience, well unless it doesn't work,like yours. Yes, you can run the filter without the skimmer & use a skimmer net to manually clean the surface of the water.

You can also put a rock in it to weight it down.

You can also put a rock in it to weight it down.

It has a 5 pound weight attached to it now. The strong winds made short work of that.
