Hayward Northstar O-ring/pump lid issue

I bought a home with a Hayward Northstar pump. THe pump has blue o-rings in it. These o rings sit on top of the basket, rather than in the groove around the pump housing.

I purchased these on amazon. These fit in the groove nicely, but now I cannot close the lid.

So my question is am I putting the o-rings in incorrectly, wrong size, wrong thickness wrong spot?

Hello and welcome to TFP! Silly question, but did you use some pool/Magic Lube on the O-ring? I also noticed on the Amazon site the following customer replies:
install in pump housing not lid and lubricate with gasket lubrication grease from pool store
The CX400G Strainer Cover O-ring fits all SP4000 pump series, including SP4015X20NS, manufactured prior to 2003. Pumps manufactured 2003 to 2007 use the SPX4000TS "T-ring", and pumps 2008 and later use the SPX4000S O-ring.

THIS SITE shows a couple O-ring options, but which one depends on the year of your pump.

Maybe this info or some other replies will help clarify for you.
