Want to cover, but not to close...good idea?

In ATL, and considering keeping pool open over winter. I want to cover pool to keep leaves out, and possibly use it if warm enough over winter. The spa is part of the pool in the sense that it shares plumbing and pours into pool. I'm thinking about keeping that uncovered and using over the winter as I can heat it separately. Any advice or feedback on that plan, i.e. that will work ok, or things I should be concerned about?

Thanks!

I'm in Dallas area and have this same question. I just bought a house with an estimated 25,000 gallon pool with attached spa that can spill into pool. My thought is to at least use the spa year around (add a cover maybe?) weekends and keep the pool open year around. Any advice would be appreciated!!
