Last Season I had to get a new pump/filter setup and went with 1hp Hayward Sand S180. All was good I thought. The Pump/Motor are stored in a shed for the winter and used maybe 4 months out of year. When I started it up there is a whining for a few seconds then stops, like a chirp. Then occasionally I hear like a 1-3 second chirp/whine while it runs and also on shutdown and it has a slight leak when running from where the motor shaft and pump meet. The shop said it sounds like the bearings are going? What would cause that? My other one I replaced (also Hayward) lasted 13 years.
I am going to replace it this week, should I put some type of cover over the motor like the ones I seen on amazon? Another interesting thing is the motor shaft got corroded only after a few months of use. The shaft has not been exposed to pool water other than the leak.

Sounds like the shaft seal failed which then caused the bearings fail. That is unusual for such a new pump which would indicate a manufacturing defect. I would look into a warranty claim.
