Turtle in the pool, what kind?

Snappers are unable to retract their head, legs and tail completely in the shell. Be careful with the bigger ones! They can chomp a small branch in half; your finger would be no problem! See this link: DEEP: Common Snapping Turtle Fact Sheet There is also a soft-shell turtle which I gather is...

Solar heater - could it also cool water a little?

Many thanks for the quick reponse! I think I'll collect a little data before "dive in."

    Drain not working

Yay! I have a similar problem, perhaps caused by glass pebbles from the "tornado" in my most recent post. My skimmer has two ports. I wonder if I could some how suck or blow out whatever is clogging the bottom drain. I'll have to play around with hoses, etc. Any one ever used an air...

    Bad storm!!

My wife witnessed something similar two or three years ago. The weather was unsettled, to say the least, when she saw a miniature tornado dump the table and top into the pool. Smashed the glass top to tiny pieces! Tempered glass does work! No damage to the liner, but we vacuumed glass...

Solar heater - could it also cool water a little?

Here in the sunny south, near Atlanta, our swimming season is pretty long, but longer would be nice! I'd given some thought to installing the extruded plastic collectors on the south-facing roof of our pool house. The solar orientation is close to ideal, the collectors are relatively light...

    Leak detection - suggestions?

The folks who installed the liner think that the wall suction fitting may be intended for a Kreepy-Krawly or such, and thus not plumbed to the main drain. But, with a gasketed plug installed in it there is some flow through the main drain. When I dumped a couple bags of salt onto the main...

    Leak detection - suggestions?

Sorry for the long delay in a response. In the mean time we've gotten two bids on replacement, both from established local companies. After careful comparisons we chose a company with 13 years' experience. Discounting the set-up chemicals to be furnished by the somewhat higher bid, the...

    Leak detection - suggestions?

Ah, 90% above ground. My above ground plumbing is within a pool house and goes directly into the building's concrete slab. Pool is swampy now, I see no reason to adjust the water when it will be pumped out. I ran the filter about 18 hours yesterday. No drop in water level other than...

    Leak detection - suggestions?

An update. Since my last post I've run the pump/filter from the skimmer and from the main drain for 12 hours or more with NO discernably different drop from the bucket test. Loss since my last post is about 1/4 inch, easily accounted for by evaporation. The dogs seem to have drunk from the...

    Leak detection - suggestions?

Many thanks for the suggestions. I've been away since last Tuesday on a family matter, so the pool has just sat, no pumping. Water loss seems more than the evaporation from a measuring cup left out. Sunday afternoon I ran the pump sourced from the main drain (water level is below the skimmer)...

    Leak detection - suggestions?

Where it goes into the concrete! I watched the installation and no undue stress was placed on the return pipe, plus I'd expect a break between the SWG and the pipe's entry into the concrete. Thanks for the suggestion! Anyone have any experience with some stuff called Fix-A-Leak...

    Leak detection - suggestions?

Thanks for the post. That's worth a look. The waste line is opaque, but empties into the bottom of the yard. If there is a leak in the multiport valve I should have recourse, since it's a new Sanddollar filter and should be under warranty.

    Leak detection - suggestions?

I've been struggling with water quality problems, and running the filter 24/7 for a couple weeks. Friday I noted more of a drop in level than would be just evaporation, so I marked the pool level and set out a measuring cup filled to the one cup level. Saturday morning the pool was down by 3...
