    CYA - Harmful?

I avoid touching the sock when I add CYA because it dries my hands out. No other problems though.

pH Adjustment Frequency before and after borates

Maybe I'm mistaken, but it seems that you think you have to replace water to lower the TA. My fill water has a TA of 250ppm, but my pool currently sits at 70 with 55ppm borates. I got there by raising my ph with aeration then knocking it back down with acid and repeating that cycle until I got...

water loss to evaporation at cold temps

That makes sense, based off the information JoyfulNoise provided. Where I live (Southern IL, St Louis area) winter doesn't get extremely cold, but we do normally get a good week to 3 of below freezing temps for highs. I don't know what my water temps will be, but I suspect more often than not...

water loss to evaporation at cold temps

Very interesting info. Thanks all, I will be reading through this today/tonight. None of it is all that important, I was just curious. My plan this year is to winterize my pump and plumbing in my pool, but leave the pool uncovered. I'm not even going to lower the water level except to backwash...

water loss to evaporation at cold temps

How does water evaporation from the pool work when it comes to cold temps? Will it evaporate when when the water is in the 50's and 60's? Does it gradually just diminish the amount it will evaporate until it hits the freezing point?

    pH rising due to aeration?

My thoughts are that you are seeing exactly what should be happening happen with TFP. Now that you've got your TA down to 60 you should see the pH rise slow down....but with a TA up at 100 or more that waterfall aeration is sure to cause pH rise. It wasn't a problem with pucks since they...

Is Smell an Indicator of Potency of Bleach?

To answer the question, even if there was a difference in smell based on concentration, I highly doubt a human's nose could decipher that difference between an 8.25% and a 12% bleach.

    alkaline drinking water

I had no idea how many places had hard water. I sure didn't know that when my family moved to a house 25 miles away from our old one, I would suddenly also have hard water. We really didn't have a problem with the taste of the non alkalized RO water, but the stuff out of the softener was...

    alkaline drinking water

I'm not always glad I opened my mouth, but this time I am. Good conversation out of this thread. Very interesting story about Arizona, I had never heard that. And indeed a good illustration. I never considered whole house RO due to the amount of waste water that would be produced, but you make a...

    alkaline drinking water

As always, I much appreciate that explanation. I have no problems with bluntness, especially since I was already leaning toward agreeing with the total Baloney Sandwich conclusion. I use a T to send RO water to a tap at our kitchen sink, and to our refrigerator for ice. At first I was using...

    alkaline drinking water

Hi all. I'm going crazy trying to research something related to my Reverse Osmosis water filter I use to filter our drinking/cooking water at home. I recently came across something talking about how RO water was bad because it lacked minerals, which led me to an alkalinity filter that my RO...

Rookie mistake after adding Borates....advice needed

Just to add, I did the borate thing and after adding them plus filling up a bit with high TA water, I found myself back up to 90 TA. I didn't worry about it. It took weeks before my pH ever moved, and so far it's only gone up from 7.5 to 7.6. My TA is back down to 70 now after a lot of rain and...

help understanding CYA level in SWGC pools vs non

that makes perfect sense. Thank you both for taking the time to explain and help me make as best sense of this as I can. having invested in my stenner setup already, I don't see myself getting a SWGC anytime soon. But I do think I may experiment a little. At last measure (though I did just get...

help understanding CYA level in SWGC pools vs non

ahh, ok. Thanks for that thorough explanation. I did not realize the salt cell was a harsh environment and almost doing double duty to sanitize the water. That definitely helps me get it. And I guess it is true I could always try things a little lower and see how they work out...but honestly, I...

help understanding CYA level in SWGC pools vs non

I've been running with the TFP method since opening my pool this summer. I get what I'm supposed to do for my setup, and have been following faithfully. But I always wonder why, when SWGC is just another method to add chlorine besides dumping in bleach, would the CYA levels vary? From what I...

How long does it take and where does the P go?

I'd bet that you not losing much chlorine all day indicates that the kids actually listened pretty well.

TA reading with high CYA question.

Also, keep a wet paper towel around when doing the TA test. Wipe the tip of the stuff you add dropwise each time you put a new drop in. Supposedly static builds up and can affect drop sizes.

    Old Stain from Tool Rusting

That looks more like a tire iron to me. I'd check to make sure there aren't any holes around those rust stains, in case it was thrown in the pool and punctured as it landed.

make my own CYA standard solution?

@pooldv lol, ok, yeah, i'm part crazy. I guess I could have answered that myself :) I'd been reading threads about people finding it off, but I didn't realize they took it down from the site because of that. All the talk about finding the right light to do the test is what made me want to buy...

make my own CYA standard solution?

Interesting. follow up questions: 1) Am I crazy that I can't find the standard solution on tftestkits.com? is it temporarily out or something? 2) If I did this, how would I know when I had added enough R-006 to get the pH back up to an acceptable range? 3) if R-0006 and R-0010 are both sodium...

make my own CYA standard solution?

I was looking for the CYA standard solution on tftestkits.com and didn't see it. This got me thinking, can't I just make my own by adding a certain amount of CYA to tap water? I'm busy trying to wrap things up as I leave work to go home, so don't feel like mucking around with pool math to...

    TA never changes

Rainwater has no alkalinity unless it has run off of some other source into your pool. I'm guessing the TA of 40 in your tap water is doing it. Consider yourself lucky. My tapwater has 250ppm TA. I try to avoid filling with my tap water because I definitely get a rise in my TA when I use it...

What about sand filters? Can they get clogged too? Ironically my neighbor's pool is cloudy today. The pool store sold him some phosphate remover.

    Phosphate Remover

this thread brings up something I've never thought to ask before, since it is ultimately of no concern. But how to phosphates get in your pool in the first place?

    Rain and Alkalinity

another option is to get a submersible pump and use that to drive the fountain/aeration rig. I have the one below. It has a 1 1/4 male thread, so I took a female PVC threaded end, mated it to some 1 1/4 pvc and T'd it off at the top, drilled holes in it, and let it run. Superior Pump 1/4 HP...

    white spots on vinyl liner

Does calcium scale happen on vinyl? I was under the impression it didn't stick to vinyl.

Will Borax cause a rise in CH?

In my experience, i think it can actually lower your calcium by causing some of it to precipitate and get filtered out of the water (or stuck to tile) due to the high pH of the stuff and the high concentration of it in the water immediately around the area you dump it into your pool. Of course...

New borate drop test at piscines-apollo vs. test strip

It might, but 1 drop of that stuff would be more than twice the 6 drops of the .04% that the directions call for. Honestly the test is tough enough trying to remember which shade of blue you are trying to match in the end, I'm not sure I'd want to mess with myself any more by using something...
