    Instant Chlorine?

I did a search on it and could not find out the exact ingredients but it appears to be a weakened chlorinating product in a powdered form. It may or may not be a trichlor/dichlor product, but it cannot be used to shock a pool since it does not apparently have enough sanitizing properties to do...

Can lime be used to raise pH?

I was only stating that MA is a dangerous chemical we introduce directly into our pools : )

Can lime be used to raise pH?

BTW, not talking about lye, talking about the millions of pounds of lime rock we use in the sugar mfg process - we have lime kilns to make milk of lime to help precipitate out the impurities while boiling - the lime dust from the rock has resulted in MANY employees with burns when the dust comes...

Can lime be used to raise pH?

Are you kidding? We use that for industrial purposes at work, it's caustic and we recently had an employee who spent a week in the hospital after lime and water sprayed his face. I know MA is also dangerous but I'm thinking absolutely not - water does not neutralize that stuff. I can't think...

Softened water vs iron filled well water, what to do?

Take it from someone with well water, iron and no water softener - go with the softener. We have no choice but to deal with the iron (it can be dealt with but why if you have a choice)

    blind faith and this forum?

I think the whole concept comes down to "use of stabilized chlorine" in it's various forms and MIS-use. You will note that there are many instances where advise is given regarding the option of a pool start up or vacation maintenance with stabilized chlorine. I guess you can choose to follow...

    Using "Iron out"

I use Iron Out in my bathroom - it is exremely caustic, I wonder if it may damage vinyl. I wouldn't use it in my own pool on my vinyl liner but maybe one of the experts can tell you more about how safe/unsafe it would be - I just know it is very caustic and use it to clean rust from the toilet...

Metals and sequestrants * Warning - long post*

We have well water with a lot of iron in it as well and had chocolate brown water one year when we forgot the sequesterant before addiing water in 2006. We have used Metal Myte from Menards/Lowes and find that it works well, however, here's what we do while filling: We add an "inline" filter...

Adding Blue Dye to pool water

I actually use an organic dye in my Koi ponds during the period just before I have full oxygenator vegetation growth (underwater plantlife) and surface coverage of my vegetation (lilies, etc) - it does in fact inhibit algae growth. But that is correct above, it would almost instantly be...

The effect of rainwater on swimming pools

If you remember (or not) last May we had over 15" of rain in a very short period of some days and in fact that was the net result - higher PH. We usually run in the area of 7.2-7.5 and found ours hovering around 7.8 or higher. This was the first time we have EVER had issues with high PH.

    Recommend a Sequestering Agent?

I have used Iron Myte for many years - very inexpensive, does the trick just fine. 4oz per 10,000 gallons - it can be purchased at Lowes, Home Depot, Menards, and some other places that sell pool supplies - $8 per quart. We have a well with iron so must use a sequesterant for each fill or top...

Well Water - To Soften or Not

If you can't find an alternative you can fill from a well with proper planning. We cannot have water trucked in and do not have a water softener. We have a standard whole house rust/sediment pre-filter to a charcoal filter in our well pump system and THEN proceed to run the fill water from...

Unusual Chlorine Demand -- Peeing in the Pool

When we had a pool party, we set up our little chem toilet from camping in private spot near the pool area we made with a shower curtain. Men use the trees, women used the chem toilet.

    Phos-Floc Journal

Wow. I thought the Environmental Community has worked for many years to eliminate introducing phosphates into our water supplies (natural and otherwise) for years - yours is putting it in to deal with metal issues? Interesting info - thanks for sharing that.

    Phos-Floc Journal

Are phosphate problems indemic to that area of the country? I have never even had that brought up around our neck of the woods. We don't have issues, but I thought this was interesting to know about.

How many inches of water are you losing to evaporation?

It keeps raining so can't even guess this year. I would say our average was around 1/3"

    Need help big time

FYI, also thought we should mention that the product your pool store was calling "shock" is most likely what was pumping your CYA way up there too. If you are going to shock your pool, stick with the bleach alone. Most of the powdered stuff has cya in it (few exceptions) so you will be right...

    BleachCalc

The calcs there do not show how much Borax to raise PH without raising the ALK. Mine is plenty high already, but my ph has dropped to 6.8 since I installed the SWG. The Borax calc there is used only for algaecide purposes.

Anyone have blueprints for an Ark?

Ditto, it throws off the chem balance so that has to be watched. The constant rain drops/splatter brought the PH WAY up on mine and of course watered down/diluted the CYA and chlorine. The skimmer did not do its job, except whatever was suspended that got pulled in and filtered by the skimmer...

    Muriatic Acid

Hardware and home centers in the cleaners section. Also, sometimes Muriatic is used in garden centers - it mixed with soils for high acid needs plants like Hydrangeas, Blueberries, etc. I do also have some dry acid and it works fine - it stores fine in tightly sealed container. If you can't...

Does liquid bleach fade vinyl liners?

Chlorine is Chlorine. The pool store will try to imply that what they are selling is something different or special - its just another form (usually powdered, granuals, tablets or concentrated) of chlorine....and usually at a higher price, but not always. Shop wisely!

BTW, for those of you who are new to all these chemicals and the initials, etc., that stands for Material Safety Data Sheet(s) : ) GOOD info to have anytime you are using or mixing chemicals. You need to know what the dangers are, what it can and cannot be mixed with and proper disposal...
