High CYA - Pool store said add shock

Stop going to the pool store and start using TFP as your pool bible. Read through the Pool School articles and get yourself a good test kit. The test strips are garbage but I do not doubt your CYA is way too high because that is a very common issue for new people just discovering this site. If...

Pressure-side connector problem - Something is stuck inside the wall fitting

There is a plastic washer on the inside of the quick connect which is supposed to suppress excessive water pressure from the booster pump. That is the only thing you should feel on the inside of the quick connect (attached to the return threads in the wall) and it should be a smooth, round hole...

I would love to have a gas powered sump pump on hand but would rarely need it. Renting from HD should be fine for this job. They will suck out an unbelievable amount of water so you will likely suck up some silt while you're at it. Just don't pump into your neighbors yard.

Also, we have extremely cheap water in our area. I recently had a leak in my main water line which we used 66,000 gallons last month and our water bill including sewage was $220. You won't really have to worry about killing yourself financially if you allow a little bit of mixing and pump out...

Covered and unattended pool for three years. What are my first two steps?

A SWG is a luxury you can consider once your pool is clean and all balanced. It will produce enough chlorine to keep things in check after all cleaned up but you will need jugs of bleach either way with how messy your "water" is. I recommend getting rid of the bromine and doing liquid bleach for...

The multiport valve is attached to the sand filter and is for directing water to different plumbing for multiple functions. Don't bother moving it around if nothing is turned on. Don't try to turn on anything or flip any switches until your pool is completely full of water. You are going to have...

Can you fill out your signature with your equipment specs/models? Do the best you can and you will modify it as you become more familiar. Look at other people's signatures for a guide. You will need to get a rough estimate of your total gallons to do proper dosing for chemicals. Mine is...

Covered and unattended pool for three years. What are my first two steps?

@Syrr I will send you a PM. I have been crazy busy the past several weeks and should have some time to swing by next week. Since you already have half the liquid gone in your pool (not really water to me), I would take everyone's advice and pump it out to get rid of the bromine and a lot of...

Hello! House we bought came with a pool.

Sorry, let me clarify. Keep the pH below 7.8 but when you get down to below 7.2 then it is too acidic and you need to raise it back up you at least 7.2. I didn't want my comment to make you think that something like 6.5 is fine. Also, you can't really have CYA of 33. It is always in increments...

Hello! House we bought came with a pool.

Did you keep the same water from testing the FC (free chlorine)? You add the R-0001 and R-0002 to test FC and then add R-0003 to test for CC (combined chlorine). If the color doesn't get any darker after adding R-0003 then you are good. Add some acid to bring down ph a bit. Anything below 7.8...

I bought this one at Lowes and it is very sturdy for scooping out big chunks of leaves. You obviously need a pole to match it. I was not kidding about swinging by to check out your situation in person to lend some help. Send me a PM if you would be up to it and it won't hurt my feelings if...

Syrr, I am in Germantown too and should be 5 minutes away. Let me know when you plan to open Pandora's Box and I will swing by to check it out. :) Whatever your pool water looks like, there have always been worse examples. I even saw pictures of someone's abandoned pool with cattails growing on...

Pool newbie trying not to get swindled by crooks in Northern Illinois :D

Get the test done but go ahead and get some polyfill to proactively start filtering out iron. You will have to allow the iron to precipitate to be able to filter it out this way so you also risk iron staining. This is one of two approaches you can take. Second, since you don't yet have any...

green tint in algae free (pretty sure) pool help

Did you ever try the vitamin C test to see if it lifted the stain? The yellowish-brown tint in the picture looks like iron and the color of the pool has a hint of green due to it mixing with the blue in your liner. Drop in a couple vitamin C tablets to see if these lift the stain to see if it is...

Doing pool by my self -Just got back from Leslie`s - here are results

Stop going to Leslie's and invest some time in the Pool school articles on TFP. Buy a good test kit and do it yourself because you can't trust someone working part time at the pool store to have proper knowledge.

All sorts of issues - Where to start?

I have a 3/4 HP single speed for my 26k gallons which pumps approx 70 gallons per minute. 2.7 HP seems to be a bit overkill doesn't it? Variable speed will save electricity and will be quite at very low rpm's and you will need some power on the high end to skim the pool but wouldn't a 1 HP VS be...

You can also do a water exchange without decreasing the water level very much. Do not let the water level get down below 2 feet from normal level and have it at least a foot deep in the shallow end for reasons Oly mentioned above. You can get a sump pump from Lowes to pump water from the shallow...

    Polaris 280 wheel coming off

When was the last time you did a complete rebuild? I was having the same problem along with several other problems which I would fix with Band-Aid solutions. I did a complete rebuild kit and now my Polaris works like it's a brand new unit. You can find the rebuild kits for about $150 on the...

How cold is your tap water in WI? If there was only a way to get your heater fired up to heat the water as it was coming into the pool. Hopefully it will warm up for you within the next couple weeks so you get use out of it before your temps start getting cold.

I knew what she meant but this is such a big makeover for your pool, why not have a party to celebrate? I actually did have a party once the liner was getting installed with about 12 people in my family hanging out on the back porch watching the guys take out the old and put in the new liner. We...

The ramp down to the deepend can be used as a water slide for a day for his party. I slipped on my ramp, landed right on my back, and slid down into the foot of water remaining. After 10 minutes of my back hurting and laughing at myself, I had my 4-year-old put on his swimming trunks and we slid...

I haven't been following your thread so I don't know what all you have planned but if you are installing your liner yourself, I would make sure you get a few extra bags of Pool Crete to make sure you get the floor/base nice and smooth. Whatever is under there currently is at least a decade old...

Almost August - Pool Still Unusable

Can she just drain the whole thing since it is above ground pool? Seems like the easiest at this point to then clean out most of the remaining gook by hand. Fill water shouldn't be green and it will take a lot of water exchanging to get CYA down from 200 to 30-50.

Add a picture of your current pool water so we can see what you are dealing with visually. I would also find some jobs for your 11-year-old to do to help you out given your personal situation right now. I don't let my 5-year-old touch any chemicals but he has fun brushing the steps and emptying...

    Money pit is poop brown

The white on your blue liner should be calcium scale which is a whole other issue and even harder to remove from vinyl. How long has it been since your pool has been properly chlorinated? I would start worrying about algae if it has been several days. You will likely need a few attempts of AA to...
