I love to eat Brazil Nuts because....

That's cause there's nothing but mud in LA, and you need rocks for radon!

    Piru Queen Palms in Houston?

Palms aren't that messy, compared to a normal tree. I've never heard of the mule palm, but Pindos are hardy so they probably would be OK. Why not just normal Pindos? C. humilis is tough as nails and pretty, but small...easily 10 years to get 5-6' tall here in Tucson, but might be faster...

Weed Killer around buttress on above ground pool.

Nope. It won't eat metal and biodegrades very quickly. Cheap, easy, and safe.

    Outdoor Kitchen Question

That frame looks indestructible...I like it! I'm not sure you need to waterproof the back, if it is underneath a roof as you say. If it is not going to get wet, and isn't visible, I'd be awfully tempted to leave it bare too.

Ceramic BBQ Grills.. Green Egg, Primo, Kamoda Joe.. Grill Dome.. Which do you have?

From what I remember reading over on the bbq forum, the vision is well-regarded, as is the cheaper Char-griller Akorn (may have a different name now) that home depot/lowes sell. They all seem to perform pretty well. I haven't looked back over there in a while, so I don't know if reliability...

Ceramic BBQ Grills.. Green Egg, Primo, Kamoda Joe.. Grill Dome.. Which do you have?

Well, kicking is an exaggeration, but lots of people have busted the eggs while pushing them around on the little carts that BGE sells for them. Do you ever really use the split grills? I can imagine some scenarios where I might, but it seems like more a gimmick.

Ceramic BBQ Grills.. Green Egg, Primo, Kamoda Joe.. Grill Dome.. Which do you have?

I have a Broil King Keg...insulated steel instead of ceramic. Looks like they've raised the price on them since I bought mine, so rather than being a few hundred less they are about the same price. The ceramics will get quite hot; the steel less so. It won't instantly burn a toddler, which is...

planning for my outdoor kitchen which screws for studs?

By the time you paint them, you probably might as well have just paid the extra for stainless. I don't see why what you posted wouldn't work.

Got any pictures of the whole cooker? A big offset, or something else?

    What's Grilling Tonight?

Looks great! Reverse sear is a lot of work sometimes but delicious!

    Building a pergola

Thanks! It has been far more work and hassle than I initially imagined, but what project isn't? It's not as aesthetically pleasing as some of the others that I've seen here and elsewhere (one person called it "Soviet"), but it gets the job done and absolutely maximizes the amount of shade...

    Building a pergola

Starting the slats! These are 1x4 redwood, spaced a little under 1" apart. That gives about 80% shade with the sun directly overhead, and more shade when it's at an angle. 2x 10d nails per slat, per rafter. If you look closely you can see a couple nails poking out the sides of the rafters...

    Building a pergola

Redwood 2x6s, 16' long. Picked through a whole bundle and a half, yet I'm somehow still smiling. Beginning the install of the hurricane ties required by the engineer. This was the most agonizing part, somewhat unsurprisingly. The combination of the thickness of the steel (3/16 or 1/4...

    Building a pergola

Update time! It was finally finished finished in January, 15 (!) months after the first plan was officially submitted. Now, 9 months of work in just a few minutes: well daddy, I'm done digging, can I come up now? Footers are 18" x 36", as per the structural engineer :whip: Notice we had to...

    Fly-by-Wire Grilling

Yep, my charcoal grill (big steel keg) is for when I'm feeling lazy. The stick burner just makes everything better! I have a hard time believing that auto-cooking thingimajig will work well.

    Tuna, Grouper & Snapper

That oil does sound delicious... I love Tony's and use it on lots of stuff, but I've never really enjoyed it on fish. Oh well!

That looks great! What seasoning do you use? I have yet to find one I really like for grilled fish.

    Covered pergola or cover patio

Both sound good to me! I'm a fan of pergolas rather than the shingled extension...seems like it would look nicer; less like an awkward addition to a porch. Please post the designs if you can! Are you sure the pergola is not subject to the same build line restrictions? Here they are...it is...

    String lights!

Thanks bdex...if it's too bright we can always replace them with 5w bulbs or just pull some out. We'll see...no tin roof on ours! Zea, this is actually the 10th year...hard to believe!
  22. Melt In The Sun

    String lights!

Well, we went ahead and ordered the less expensive ones...100' total. I cannot imagine that 100 7w bulbs won't be bright enough. If the cheaper wires fail we're only out 30 bucks. I'll post some pictures once they're set up!

Interesting! Water under the bridge now though...

    String lights!

Stang - we looked at lots of stuff...with LEDs, nothing is bright enough unless you spend hundreds. Smforte - really? That's odd...we have left ours out and that hasn't happened. It shouldn't unless the glass has already cracked, right? Now you've got me worried.

    String lights!

With our pergola just about complete (incomplete to-be-updated story here: http://www.troublefreepool.com/threads/68235-Building-a-pergola), we're starting to think about lighting! Probably going to go with string lights...anyone have experience with these? We have used a fairly inexpensive...
