Ice damaged diamond brite plaster finish

It was definitely etched into surface and not raised. In fact, it seemed more like pits in the surface, small craters that were rough to touch?

Ice damaged diamond brite plaster finish

PB came today. Drained water level down to provide a work surface. Said they did a combination of wet sanding and acid washing to remove the rough surface. Perhaps the abrasion was on surface and didn’t go very deep. Now filling water back up to get pump running.

Ice damaged diamond brite plaster finish

JoyfulNoise, was afraid you’d say that [emoji22]. It was not only our first winter but a bit extreme for this part of country. The surface of this step was likely the only surface that came in contact with ice. Since it’s Super Blue Diamondbrite quartz plaster, are they ever able to mix and...

Ice damaged diamond brite plaster finish

Seem to have lost some quartz plaster which has caused pitting, so surface has become rough. But only on this step. It doesn’t go all the way thru to the concrete that I can tell.

Ice damaged diamond brite plaster finish

PB coming out in couple weeks to repair this. Am still a bit unclear on the cause of this issue, what the nature of the repair will be and how to prevent it from reoccurring?

Ice damaged diamond brite plaster finish

Thanks so much Kimkats. AFAIK it’s the only area of the pool that has suffered this type of damage. The pool is only a year old. Was put in Nov 2016-Jan 2017, only used one season. Making this the first full winter, one with unseasonably cold temps and surface ice. Also, this is the most shallow...

Ice damaged diamond brite plaster finish

First winter with pool. Didn’t winterize at first. Until New Years temps held near 0 for a few days. Covered equipment pad with tarp, 60W bulb overnight, kept pump running. Pool started freezing. Panicked. Had pool winterized by PB. After thawing, noted surface of my first step into pool had...

    Test chemistry while winterized?

While skimmer leaves today and doing a little bit of brushing, I noticed on the top, horizontal surface of my top step (shallow end of pool), what appears to be a bit of abrasion to the diamond brite surface of the first step into the pool. It’s not nearly as smooth as it was before the pool...

    Test chemistry while winterized?

After this season, I intend to winterize from now on for peace of mind. Weather has become so unpredictable, just not worth the risk. Had I simply left pool equipment running this year, in the south, until the 0 temps subsided, it would’ve been too late.

    Test chemistry while winterized?

Appreciate the suggestions. Today I filled 2 gallon milk jugs 1/3 each with marine antifreeze and added some sand for weight and placed them in each of my skimmers. Didn’t have any pool noodles. Also these milk jugs are about the size of my skimmers. Hope they will be a good safeguard if ever...

    Test chemistry while winterized?

Kim, not exactly. Was hoping the plastic gallon jugs would absorb the pressure from ice forming, similar to how large inflatable floats work on surface of above ground pools. Unfortunately impossible to prevent ice from forming. Just thought it might exert pressure inward on the containers. Not...

    Test chemistry while winterized?

Thanks Kim. Very helpful! Was going to construct the pool noodle method in skimmers. Also considered throwing in a series of plastic, gallon milk jugs 1/3 full of antifreeze at the pool surface as a precaution. Perhaps 5 or so. Am forming a collection. If that would be helpful?

    Test chemistry while winterized?

My first winter with an IGP. Had pool pump running 24/7 for entire season with perfectly balanced water until temps dropped dangerously low around New Years. Day and night temps were 0-4F and water was rapidly freezing despite pump running. Even had tarp over equipment pad with 60W bulbs...

    Help running pool year round

I saw somewhere suggestions of a 200 watt incandescent bulb under a tarp to protect equipment on pad from freezing during lower temperatures. Can anyone recommend a good fixture to put a 200W bulb in under the tarp? I don't have any old lamps or work lights with this wattage rating and want to...

    swimming pool covers???

First time SWG pool owners. Pool will be built late this season before winter. We've opted not to get a cover for initial cost, weren't sure whether we needed... no experience yet. Don't anticipate having many trees/leaves to worry about. No pets. Kids are 4 and 7... would teach them not to...
