    Okay, but, OP asked for opinions. I never said they wouldn't last. I also never said someone had to buy new ones every year. You'd have to have a set of clean ones ready to swap out for the dirty one(s), and then clean the dirty one(2) and set that aside for the next time the filter needs...

    Oops I opened my sand filter - now what

    You're going to have to empty the water(drain at the bottom) and remove the sand. Is the center pipe stuck to your top? You're going to have to get that off so you can get the sand out onto a tarp so you can reseat the laterals and refill it again. That's the only solution I can think of...
