adjusting PH at high chlorine levels

I was recently tasked to rectify a pool that had been left with no care for several months. It was very green with growths on the bottom that were beginning to look like green dust bunnies. I jumped right in with Home Depot's HDX 10% chlorine at a 12-15 PPM level and after a few days it is...

    Dirt Cheap pumps on Ebay

Replaced the motor on my pump a year ago and it has burned up again. It is an antique pump and I am going to buy a new one. It is very tempting to try one of these pumps on Ebay since they are so cheap. (I know you get what you pay for) But Sometimes you pay more than you need to...

persistent blackish grout and daily gray settlement

OK, I have left a puck in the bottom for days with no effect. I wire brushed a small area and to get the black out I had to brush till I started damaging the surrounding tile finish. I have the vitamin C on my Grocery list. Why do you ask the pools age? Does grout discolor over time? (I know...

persistent blackish grout and daily gray settlement

It's probably 30 something old. Sounds like a plan but I don't understand "the ones you can stand and brush towards the top" the discoloration is mainly on the floor I don't have a steel pool brush. I was trying to find out if it is OK to use one on tile and, if so, I was going to...

persistent blackish grout and daily gray settlement

Greetings fellow chlorinators, Being fairly new to the pool maintenance adventure and having inherited a sorely neglected pool I am getting a crash course, with the help of you all and Pool School, in many aspects of pool care and problem solving. I have had, so far, three algae blooms. All...

    Another borate question(s)

If borates lower chlorine usage as stated in the "So you want to add borates" article, how does one determine this decrease? Pool math gives the same demand results with or without Borates added. Do borates prevent loss? Is there a table somewhere I am not aware that outlines a new FC...

    pool light with no screws

Has anyone ever seen that? It is an old fixture with a cracked lens that still works but I can't see how to get it out to clean and repair it. The bezel is brass and it appears to be caulked in.

FC test seems to be meaningless, I'm about to drown myself!

OK, time to take a break and read my Buddhist book "Comfortable with Uncertainty" Thanks

FC test seems to be meaningless, I'm about to drown myself!

OK, here are 6 tests from the same cup. Seems to indicate that the minutest variation can skew the test wildly! As I have been going I am trying to be consistent in all aspects and letting each drop fall off of it's own weight. This seems to be the solution. 28 30 27 29 29 29

FC test seems to be meaningless, I'm about to drown myself!

That's Yes, and Yes To begin with I was dropping fast. That's when I get 24 drops. Slowed down, measured DPD powder generously, got full hanging drops, and tried to be completely consistent…two tests in a row and got 28 and 32 - - - Updated - - - gonna try that now but the pump has been...

FC test seems to be meaningless, I'm about to drown myself!

I have been having what seemed like testing inaccuracies for some time now. I figured maybe my methodology is wrong, maybe my measuring is inconsistent, maybe my reagents are bad…… So I got a speed stir and a sample sizer and new reagents from TFTest Kits and every test gives a different...

    Algae detection?

I have been SLAMming for 5 days now. The overnight FC loss has been 0 since the beginning as has the CC but I keep going because of the Green dust Every morning the pool is clear but when I brush there is green dust on the bottom and sides. It is decreasing but the green color makes me think...

testing errors - Can OCL be 0 ?

You really should continually swirl. That is why most of us purchased a SpeedStir after our wrists began to hurt.... While I really respect and appreciate all the info you guys so graciously give, I am the consummate cynic and doubter so I did the FC test swirling drop by drop and then I did...

testing errors - Can OCL be 0 ?

The same way I would determine I was going 34 MPH on a speedometer that had numbers that end in 0. it is 4/10 of the way between 30 and 40 Is that wrong? While on the subject of testing technique, When I am testing for FC, and I know I am going to put in 20+ drops, is it ok to put in 5 or 10...

testing errors - Can OCL be 0 ?

testing errors - Can OCL be 0 ?

shocking with 5.25% Home Depot bleach Following the SLAM process religiously. Using new Taylor K2006 kit and new Reagents. FC loss last night 0 CC 0 Maintaining 13 PPM water still cloudy greenish yellow dust on floor brushing and vacuuming

testing errors - Can OCL be 0 ?

I have recently had some ridiculous test results. I am not one that cannot follow directions. I know that I am doing the tests correctly (with corrective council from this site) I recently ran out of DPD powder and got some new. Don't know if that is relevant but I had no problems before...

    Algae detection?

Oh well I think I better shock cause the color is wrong, it is cloudy still after running the pump all day and there has to be something wrong. Just when I thought I had a handle on all this some inexplicable mystery happens. Should I go to Mustard shock level or regular….best guess advice :O)

    Algae detection?

Ok but I am still left with the ridiculous situation that in 24 hours I am reading 0 chlorine loss with no Chlorine addition. I did put in 3 cups of acid about 11 AM to move the PH down a little. That is the only thing that went in the pool since yesterday

    Algae detection?

Well that is certainly the answer I expected. That is why I think I am in the twilight zone 4+ means with a 10cc sample it turned clear with 8 drops but within 30 seconds it got a very pale pink hue so it's 4.5 or less?

    Algae detection?

Twilight zone….. Yesterday multiple tests showed 4.0 FC OCLT was 4 and 4+ now at 4 PM and after a sunny day in the keys and NO CLORINE ADDITION it is 5.0 6:15 PM down to 4+

    Algae detection?

Thanks for that. Education continues and is cumulative (Thank God, I don't have to remain a dummy) :O) So perhaps my testing was faulted? .05 is my usual overnight loss
  29. M

    Algae detection?

Strangeness… OCLT shows no loss… in fact if anything it show FC gain! I know that sounds like poor testing but I was especially careful even to the point of using 25ML of water for the FC test and scraping the DPD spoon with a straight edge for accuracy and last night it took 19 drops to clear...
