Closing questions from a first timer

I want to try to close our pool this year because I'm tired of paying the PS hundreds of $$ and them only doing half the job. However, I am SO clueless when it comes to anything mechanical. I think I can handle it, once I know what to do. I'm so afraid of messing it up and ruining our pool...

First Numbers - what do you think?

Just got pump running today. Pool is VERY green because it's been sitting without a pump for a week. I did the best I could with adding chlorine and brushing, but it looks pretty bad. Numbers are 9 hours after getting pump running. FC 15 CC 1 PH 7.4 TA 110 (could be 100, turned purple first...

    A week without a pump - should I buy a backup?

I tried our submursable pump and it just didn't seem to be doing a whole lot. I don't know if i have a small one or what? I put the pump in one side and put the other end of the hose in the other side and i just couldn't really see any water circulating. None of the settled stuff on the bottom...

    A week without a pump - should I buy a backup?

Our pool was opened last Friday. We couldn't turn the pump on till we got the water refilled over the weekend. Got it filled, tried pump on Monday, wouldn't work. Took it to a repair shop Monday afternoon and have yet to even hear an estimate. Not to mention the time it's going to take for them...

    PS suggested non-chlorine shock - should I?

My pump is down and is "hopefully" being repaired. Our pool has been at a stand still for 3 days now, but I did just start up the submersible pump today to move things a bit. While talking to the PS today about getting the pump repaired, they suggested I could put Non-Chlorine shock in the pool...

    Now pump won't work.

Oh ok, thanks! I actually checked both. The breaker box first (which didn't even have it's own breaker for the pool, so I wonder which one it is). Then I plugged something else into the outlet. There's no GFCI on the actual plug. As far as wiring, I guess I'll leave that up to the...

Yes I did. Was that not the right thing to do?

    Now pump won't work.

Power is good. No idea if water got in it or not. I ended up taking it to an electrician that works on pool pumps. First thing he said was "that doesn't look very old". I told him there. May be nothing wrong with it. We just don't understand enough about pools and pumps. So I guess we'll see...

    Now pump won't work.

Ugh. I'm seriously NOT liking having a pool right now. I have more problems just getting going... Now, that I've finally gotten the water level up and the drain plug replaced on the pump, the pump won't work! I tried to plug it in for the first time for the season (opened by PS, but they...

How can I circulate my pool water - pump down.

Thanks! I'll try the hose idea. We only have one level (no deep/shallow) but I'll just put it in one side vs the other. I thought about running around the pool with the vaccuum as fast as I could for awhile ;) But at 7 months pregnant, that's not going to happen, lol.

How can I circulate my pool water - pump down.

I had a problem with my pump and you've all helped me figure that out. But until I can get it fixed, I would like to be able to circulate the water. It's already looking worse after 3 days. I have a submursable pump, how can I use it? Leave the hose of and just let it sit at the bottom of the...

Just opened Friday, pump broken, what to do?

Ok, I finally found a parts schematic online. It does look like a drain plug/o-ring. I'll try and see if it's something that needs tightened or if it's missing. I have no idea where it could be. The pump doesn't get moved except to take it to the basement at the end of the season and brought...

Just opened Friday, pump broken, what to do?

Thanks Jason - I'll check that. And maybe try to get some pics of what I'm talking about. If that's not it, can I somehow use the submersible pump to circulate the water?

Just opened Friday, pump broken, what to do?

When we opened on Friday we couldn't start everything up because we needed to add water. We've been doing that over the weekend and was trying to finish the fill up today. Well, DH went out to check and there was water pouring our of our pump (it was not on). It was coming out of the part...

Pool cover pump - hose misaligned - help!

I need help! I guess I'm a wimp. I hooked up our new pool cover pump this morning and I guess I got the threading misaligned on the hose and the adapter. Now it's STUCK and I can not get it apart. It's "working" still but it's spraying some water out where it's not aligned right. So it's not...

    How to partial drain AGP?

FPM - so the same submursible pump can be used to drain the cover and drain the pool? That's good to know.

    How to partial drain AGP?

Thank you! We're not open yet, so I don't have a set of numbers yet. I did a lot of research on this last year too but I'll get something posted when I get some numbers.

    A couple winter cover questions.

Thanks everyone. I do hope to do our own open/close soon. I just get so worried about connected all the hoses and power etc. I replaced a hose myself last year and could NOT get it tightened enough. It kept blowing off. I ended up having to have the pool company come out anyway to tighten for me.

    A couple winter cover questions.

No, it's like a huge round tarp type cover that just tightens around the lip of the pool. It's not hard. It's what the owners before us used (but we had to get a new one) and it's what the pool store recommended. It seems to be what everyone around here uses.

    A couple winter cover questions.

We've only had the pool for two seasons so I don't know if we're doing it right or not. Our pool store closes for us. 1) Is there a way to keep water off the winter cover (snow, rain, etc) or at least minimize it? Or, is it not a problem to be there. 2) Last year, the PS was upset with us...

    How to partial drain AGP?

What's the best way to do this? Just drain to the skimmer, refill, and drain again? I'm going to try to get my CYA down this year. Our pool is being opened in 2 weeks. Or, should I get some sort of pump thing that goes in the pool and drains it our through a hose over the side. Do they make...

    Kit refill questions

I need to order some refills for my Taylor 2006. I need the R 0871 stuff for testing FC. 1) Do I need to stick with the 3/4oz bottle? Will the 2oz. bottle (assuming it's all in one bottle, not two 1oz bottles) fit in my blue box? 2) How long do these reagents last? Will I have to replace...

    baffled CYA

I'm going to venture to guess you're adding CYA without realizeing it. If you're using trichlor or dichlor or cal hypo, I'm pretty sure those all add to CYA. The only one that doesn't is straight liquid chlorine. **Correct me if I'm wrong those who know more.

Can my FC really be that low?

Is the Algae dead? Merged for history. Please keep all questions concerning clearing your pool in this thread. Butterfly Ok. I've been shocking with bleach and the pool is looking a lot better. Can my FC really be that low?

shock level - Pool calc. vs. FC/CYA chart Merged for history. Butterfly When I enter my info. in the calculator. It tells me shock level is 21. However, on the Chlorine/CYA chart, it tells me shock level is 31. Which one is right? I've been going my 31, but it would save me a heck of a lot...

Can my FC really be that low?

How much would a store bought bag of "shock" raise FC? Merged for history. Butterfly The subject pretty much says it all. I have a few of these left over and was wondering if I could use them up since I need to shock for algae reasons. But I don't know how many to add. I know I need 2 bags...
