    Startup-New Plaster Job

No, it was not tested for metals. The pool has experienced some metal staining, but that happened several years ago, and I believe the major source of those metal stains were derived from an old heater fire tube. My interpretation of the pool school start-up procedure is to add the...

    Startup-New Plaster Job

Just finished a replastering job on Friday, Aug. 27. Commenced refill at 3 p.m.(CDT) same day and finished refill at 12 noon, Aug.28. Have added some acid and Jack's Magic Blue Stuff - 2 quarts for a +/- 21K pool. 1) Is that enough sequesterant? Recommended to use 1 qt./10K. Don't have any...

    Patch Vs. Replaster

Thanks for the patch comments. I'm still considering the situation. If I drain the pool, I'll try the golf ball theory. I don't know the thickness of the plaster, but I'd guess it's about 1/4". Will check that further. Jimwt

    Patch Vs. Replaster

Thanks for your comment. I will probably opt for replastering. The plaster is 25 years old and somewhat stained. I tried asorbic acid treatment for stain last fall, but although it seemed to help somewhat, the stain is still present. Maybe I didn't use enough acid(2 lbs) and/or a bad...

    Patch Vs. Replaster

Trying to decide whether or not to patch a hole in plaster in pool wall about 6' deep. Some people advise that patches don't last, will leak, and not match color of rest of pool. Of course, to completely replaster pool will cost about 15-16 times as much as the patch, but I would end up with a...

    Scale

The pool and spa plumbing is totally separate and are not in the same location. I will redirect the return jet to reduce agitation after lowering the TA with acid; then see if the pH stays under better control. Thanks for the inputs. Jimwt

Update: As noted earlier, the acid wash worked well as did lowering the TA with acid and using aeration to raise pH while keeping the TA low. Current analysis: pH-7.4-8.2*, TA-100, FC-4, CC-Tr, CH-400-500, CYA-28, Temp-83 *Problem with keeping pH in range. Can add acid and lower it to 7.4, but...

Update: Things are going reasonably well with my pool now. I am using primarily bleach and acid to maintain FC and pH: however I'm using some trichlor tabs at the moment to keep FC up and to raise the CYA somewhat in hopes that I won't have to use so much bleach later. Analysis: pH-7.8...

    Scale

Update: I had my tub acid washed last Mon. It looks great. Been working on water since then: pH-7.8, TA-75, FC-8.5(after shock to 10+), CC-1.5, TC-10, CYA-0, Temp-82 deg F. Should I be concerned about the CC? Plan to add some CYA, shooting for 30. Thanks again, Jim wt

Thanks for the info. You'd think Leslie's would indicate the presence of CYA in their chemical ingredient list. Can stand a little increase in CYA anyway-now 38. I rechecked the pH & TA after adding 2 cups of Dichlor. pH is still at 7.2 & CL just at 0.5, but TA is up to 110. Don't really...

Well folks, after 4 3/4 gal acid, finally got the pH down to 7.0 and TA to 90.(lost some time over the weekend. I was gone.) This a.m., 6/30, pH-7.2, and TA-90. Now plan to shock to 15 ppm CL(CYA is about 36). Plan to use Dichlor to start and switch to bleach after getting CL up. Have some...

    Puzzled: Did a partial drain and lowerd CH from 480 to about 410. Chem. after refill: FC-Tr., pH-8.2(+,I think), TA-190, CH-410, CYA-36, Temp-87 deg. F Added 3 qt. HCl(20 Baume) at 3:00-3:10 p.m., At 5:00, pH-8.0, TA-170. At 7:45 p.m., pH-8.2. Whoa! What's going on here? Should I keep...

Like to request some help on setting priorities for treating my pool. Have several items to work on. Chem. pH-8.2+, TA-200, FC-2(at the moment), CC-<0.5, CH-480(Was 600, but lowered by partial drain), CYA-44(was about 100, but lowered with partial drain). Temp-80-83 deg F. Water is clear and...

    Scale

Well, I lowered the TA to 50-60 using the aeration method with acid over the weekend. Worked well. pH would drop to the 6.8 and bounce back to 7.2-7.6 in a few minutes with aeration. Took more acid than calculated to get the TA down. With just the main spa pump running, pH kept rising after...

    Scale

Thanks for all your inputs. At least now I have a plan which is try the aeration technique to lower TA and acid for pH. Most of the scale is new but some has been present for nearly a year. If aeration with lower pH doesn't work, I'll proceed to the acid wash method(hate to think about it)...

First time poster: I have a scale problem in my spa(what's the difference between a hot tub and a spa?). The scale which is dirty looking is probably CaCO3 with embedded sand. Water Chem: pH-8.2, FC-2.5, CC-<0.5, TA-180, CH-250-300, CYA-0 A review of posts in this forum suggests that the...
