Algae? Pollen? Or am I taking crazy pills?

We’re experiencing very similar things. Yes, the floor deposits occur in generally the same areas every day. And nothing at all on the walls, entirely the floor. Plus, no slickness in those floor spots whatsoever.

Algae? Pollen? Or am I taking crazy pills?

I performed the OCLT and it appears the pool lost, at most, 1.0 of FC. So right on the borderline. And still some of the greenish-yellowish “dust” on the bottom. Water is totally clear though. So perplexing!

Algae? Pollen? Or am I taking crazy pills?

Fantastic! I've been concerned since I started with TFP 5 years ago that I'd have people swimming in a toxic chlorine soup!

Algae? Pollen? Or am I taking crazy pills?

Got it. But just so I totally understand, in your example (FC = 9, CYA = 60) that's not SLAM level. If I amp up my pool to, say, an FC of 18, while the CYA is 40, people can go in? The CYA/FC chart says SLAM level would be 16 with a CYA of 40.

Algae? Pollen? Or am I taking crazy pills?

Thanks for the reply! I'll do a formal OCLT, although I test daily, and, informally, it doesn't seem like I'm losing any FC overnight. As to the SLAM... is it really safe to have swimmers in the pool if the FC level is 16+? I've assumed that was dangerous, and needed to get the FC level...

Algae? Pollen? Or am I taking crazy pills?

I have been diligent about keeping my FC levels in the appropriate range all summer. CYA is 40, and I haven't let FC dip any lower than 5 since May. Typically it has been in the 7-10 range. In the past few days I've seen what looks like "algae" in small clusters at the bottom of my pool (4...

Hayward XStream above ground filter top leaking...

I have a 6 year old Hayward XStream cartridge system for an above ground po. Today after cleaning the cartridge I can’t get the top to seal and water is leaking from the unit around the rim where it threads together. Starting last summer I wasn’t able to screw the top on all the way until it...

Pool cover is wayyyyy underwater. Pumping possible or lost cause?

Thanks. I suppose that'd still put the swampy cover-top water in the pool, but at least it'll be easier to get the cover off this weekend!

Both great ideas. I'll give 'em a shot!

Pool cover is wayyyyy underwater. Pumping possible or lost cause?

How much water can one expect to pump off a cover when it's wayyyyyyy underwater?! I bought a new pool cover last fall for my 21' circular above ground pool, and it stinks. My previous one didn't allow much transference, but this one has been a sieve. Add to that my air pillow popped...

Possible to have a tiny bit of algae?

Thanks folks. I'm going away for a long weekend on Friday so I may just breakdown and SLAM when I return. It'll probably be worse then anyway since I won't be able to brush for 3 days. A question though.... Should I be concerned about high FC levels for my liner? My pool is only 3 years old...

Possible to have a tiny bit of algae?

I'm not familiar with a skimmer sock so I'll read up on it and maybe try that. My neighbor, who's pool is very similar to mine and is located all of 30 yards from mine, told me recently that he's had recurring mustard algae for 2 season running. So perhaps that's it. My liner is blue, and I...

Possible to have a tiny bit of algae?

Well, this has just become a persistent problem I can't seem to solve. On Saturday I took the advice here and hand-vacuumed every inch of the pool floor that had a little faint green/dirt/debris on it. I spent an hour going step by step sucking up everything. Sunday morning it was faint...

Possible to have a tiny bit of algae?

Yep, that's what happens. I brush it and it turns into a little cloud. But at various times over the past few days there is either more or less of it. So I figured if there was more at times it must be alive and growing. I can try to vacuum it up but what tends to happen is when I get in the...

Possible to have a tiny bit of algae?

Thanks Chief! I hadn't really considered that the algae I've been seeing is dead. It's still been faintly green so I assumed it's alive. And PAGirl, I've been angling my return down to churn the bottom as much as possible. The algae's only been on the floor so I'm sure circulation has...

Possible to have a tiny bit of algae?

I meant to ask, though, in many pieces here it says that if a pool has algae it's "dangerous" to swim in. Does that apply to my situation? I'm not clear on what "dangerous" means and I certainly don't want to get anyone sick!

Possible to have a tiny bit of algae?

Thanks, guys. FC was 12.5 last night as I started another OCLT and this morning was 11.5 with near 0 CC. Had a couple faint algae spots. So I brushed them and added another 20 oz of liquid chlorine. Maybe I'll add another 10 oz and see how it goes.

Possible to have a tiny bit of algae?

This situation is driving me a little nuts. Since Sunday I've been running my filter nearly 24/7. I've amped up the FC level to 10-11 repeatedly, and it's only dropped as low as 7.5 (and only for a little bit before I raised it again). The CC level has either been 0 or darn close to 0 the...

Possible to have a tiny bit of algae?

Thanks TS! I also just realized I messed up the OCLT. I measured the FC at 7.5 just after sundown and then added 30 oz of LQ. So the 10.5 I reported was an approximation. Just dawned on me that I wasn't supposed to add any chlorine once I got a measurement to start the OCLT. Man, I'm...

Possible to have a tiny bit of algae?

Update (if anyone cares!)... Did a proper OCLT. Was 10.5 at 9:30pm and 9.0 at 7:30am. CC appeared to be zero (or darn near it). On the bright side there were only a couple little spots of algae on the floor this morning, definitely an improvement from yesterday. Added another 30 oz. of...

Possible to have a tiny bit of algae?

Thanks Wildcat. The FC of 2 is rare, I almost always have it in the 3-5 range, but I will try to push it higher given the CYA. I've had a puck in for the past week or so to try and raise CYA since we're in the first heat wave of the summer here in CT. And you're not the first person advising...

Possible to have a tiny bit of algae?

Thanks all, I really appreciate the replies. I'll do a more rigorous OCLT test tonight/tomorrow. And I totally get the "there is no such thing as a little algae" perspective. I've read here that a pool is unsafe with algae present, hence my concern! Didn't know if there was a safe/unsafe line.

Possible to have a tiny bit of algae?

Used my TF-100 test kit and did the FC/CC test (so, yes, I believe that counts as OCLT). Went from 9 to 8.5... BUT realized I had a puck in overnight (I don't normally use pucks but I had one in the past week to boost the CYA a little).

Possible to have a tiny bit of algae?

I've been a member here for 3 summer seasons and it's been great. Hoping someone can point me in the right direction on something. First, the details... -11,000 gallon above ground pool with vinyl liner in CT - FC hasn't been below 2 ppm all season and is typically between 4-6ppm - CC has...

Jumping into the pool experience. Thanks for this place!

Thanks folks! So helpful, this place! linen, apologies for my ignorance (I swear I'll try my best to be a quick learner) but can you explain to a newbie what you mean by "holding the connector inline with my return flow"? Do you mean you keep the unit out of the water and then plunge it in...
