Sanitizing an all season pool With Tablets without spiking CYA?

My experience is quite the same in Jersey. Every Spring I open my pool from winteriztion to find a CYA near 0. I raise it rapidly to 60-70 using pure stabilizer. (I have a SWG). By the time I close my pool in Oct I have dropped down to about 50 for whatever reason. Splash out, water loss...

Sanitizing an all season pool With Tablets without spiking CYA?

You are remembering that 100% correct. Dissolving tablets in standing water for a prolonged period of time is disastrous. It won't happen overnight, but over years it will. I know from experience. When I was growing up, this was the only way we knew how to chlorinate. After many years, the...

Conversion Factor to convert 20% MA to 31.45% MA

First and foremost, make sure you are reading the bottle correctly. Are you sure you are looking at a 20% concentration and not a 20° Baume? Because 20° Baume IS 31.45% Once confirmed, the factor is very simple: Use 31.45% as you baseline. Then divide it by the %'age you can get your...

Sanitizing an all season pool With Tablets without spiking CYA?

Thanks for the replies and discussion. I don't recall asking about a "maintenance-free" or "no-maintenance" solution in my original post. Nor would I ever expect that. But hey, people interpret questions different. Nonetheless, good suggestions. I like the idea of LC every other day or even...

Sanitizing an all season pool With Tablets without spiking CYA?

This is going to be a long post. So for the TLDR crew, here it is in a nut shell: How do you guys in the south, who: 1. Still sanitize with "pucks" and 2. Don't close their pool for the winter manage to not send their CYA levels to absurd levels? Now for the detailed version: A buddy of mine...

    Cloudy water after treatment

Hey ramsfan. Thanks for alerting me that you posted on this topic. Yup. Exact same problem I had back then. I see all the links to my old photos have been broken in the earlier posts, but hopefully you watched the youtube video I posted, because that really showed what was going on. I don't...

    Polaris 280 life span?

Big fan of my Dolphin as well. As a matter of fact, my Polaris 280 has been in retirement since the Dolphin has come out of the bullpen.

    Polaris 280 life span?

because of this comment: you would be better off just buying a new cleaner. As for the pump, unless the motor is shot, it would be more cost effective to replace the seals. the leak you are describing between the housing and the motor is usually an easy fix with a new seal kit.

Want to make sure I'm headed in the right direction

You are correct that the only way to lower your CYA is by doing a partial drain. The most important thing you should concern yourself with after refill is keeping the pool properly sanitized i.e. your FC level. After that in order of importance, the CYA and pH, and finally tweaking the CH and TA.

    Going on Vacation

POOL MATH will tell you how much CYA each puck will add to your pool. POOL MATH will also tell you how much chlorine it will add. if you stuff a floatie with as many pucks as you can fit, you will stay well sanitized for 1 week.

North Texas Pool Build, Almost Complete

lantanapoolbuild Your thread caught my eye last night. I really enjoy watching in ground pool construction pics. Thanks for sharing. Looks great. I have nothing to add other than how great it looks. But I noticed your location under your name and wanted to just say my thoughts and well...

Fire Pit Height - show me your fire pits

Love the fire pit incorporated right into the edge of the pool. Very unique design there! Is that NG powered?

Best way to warm the pool as much as possible?

After a quick Google search and reading a few articles on the topic, I stand corrected on the Magnification comment. There are plenty of references however that the solar cover converts solar radiation into usable heat. Not sure I fully understand what that means or how that works. But it...

Spa draining into pool when equipment is off

ahah. OK. I see it now. Are you comfortable cutting up that PVC and gluing in new couplings and a new housing? It's going to look a little Frankensteined, but it is doable. Personally I would go knock on the door of the guy who installed it a raise Holy ---- if he's not answering your...

How does the Maytronics M400/M4 handle leaves?

I have a Dolphin Explorer. It uses the bag, not the cartridges. Sucker holds A LOT. I will give you one of my most extreme examples. During SuperStorm Sandy I had an entire tree fall on the pool. It was already closed for the season. Lines were blown out, cover was on, etc. The tree...

Best way to warm the pool as much as possible?

It does both. The solar cover magnifies and intensifies the rays. Then it also traps in the heat when the ambient temp cools down (at night). I don't know what the "normal" practice is, but I certainly would do it that way. Also, aim your return eyeballs down.

    Getting some things straight

There's always exceptions, but as far as a generalization, you are correct about types of stains and cloudiness. There are other things that can cause cloudiness, but you are on the right path to determine first if algae.

Best way to warm the pool as much as possible?

Not sure I completely understand the question. Why wait till tonight to put the solar cover on? Put it on today and get 2 full days of the sun heating it. It will also hold the heat in if left on. Then remove it when it comes time to swim. As far as the pump running. If you don't run the...

Spa draining into pool when equipment is off

I'm not sure exactly what I am seeing from this pic. But if you indeed see that the flapper doesn't make a 100% seal in the down position, then that appears to be the culprit. What now? Are you going to attempt to cut the pipe and glue in a whole new housing?

How Much Will A Chlorine Puck Raise the CYA in an 18000 gallon pool?

I say stuff half a dozen of those 3" pucks into a duck, turtle of shark floatie. (personally like the shark myself). Keep running SWG on usual schedule... With that you will stay very sanitized while gone...... IF they all dissolve by the time you get back that will have raised your CYA by...

Spa draining into pool when equipment is off

Can I talk you into getting a fully automated system that has valves that will mechanically turn according to a program you set? LOL.. Just kidding, it can get pricy, but be aware there is that option. It would involve getting a control center board installed along with the special valve caps...

Spa draining into pool when equipment is off

In case anyone is confused by this statement I just want to clarify. In the photo below, ajknoll23's spa drains when the red circled valve is in position shown. When I had him rotate that valve exactly 180 deg (i.e. closed off the Spa returns completely), thereby taking the task of the check...

Spa draining into pool when equipment is off

This is certainly possible. Perhaps there is something along the inside that is holding up the flap from fully closing. While I know this is a frustrating thing to deal with, there really is no harm in the Spa partially draining back into the pool every day. (ajknoll23 runs his equipment...

How Much Will A Chlorine Puck Raise the CYA in an 18000 gallon pool?

I just realized this wasn't answered. Get a floater. When the puck is dissolving during times of the pump not running picture this: A stagnant puddle of water in the basket with an acidic pH of 4.0 and a FC of 100 (maybe exaggerations, but the idea remains --- Those harsh conditions not too...

How Much Will A Chlorine Puck Raise the CYA in an 18000 gallon pool?

Are you considering this just so they don't go to waste? Or do you feel your SWG needs a little help while you are away? Because you can't bump up the %'age on the SWG or increase the run time if you want to have FC on the high side while you are away. That said, I believe it's not a terrible...

    Calculating PPM by hand

Cam - Here's an interesting theory. Strictly theory. I'll lay it out there and perhaps you may see some credence in it: Being that there is no such thing as 100% bleach in real life, perhaps it is an unsolvable equation. But look at my snap shot above of the current POOL MATH calculator...

    Calculating PPM by hand

No problem. Glad I caught that. But that is even more obscure now. The old vs new calculator is disagreeing by 150%. At least the old calculator was close to your hand calculation. (24 vs 25 ozs). But the new POOL MATH calculator is now a 1.5 times multiple of doing a hand calculation...
