    Pool fill, sequestrant and filtering

My pool was already shut down for the season. Now I am replacing the liner before winter rather than doing so in the spring to ensure the pool is good for an early spring event. I am filling with city water hauled in, but there is iron on the city water in my area. My old liner was stained, and...

    Autocover with low water level

I have an auto cover. I am trying to identify a leak in the pool. Since I am about ready to close the pool, and the water level needs to go down anyway, I am allowing the water level to drop from the leak hoping it will stop at some point, and I can figure out where the leak is based on where it...

    Liner replacement

Can anyone comment on the wisdom (or lack thereof) of doing your own liner replacement? I am a very solid do-it-yourself-er, but I do not want to regret trying this. How about directly purchasing a liner on line? If you think that is a good idea, does anyone have experience with any on line...

    CYA consumption

Is there anything other than algae that consumes CYA. I have added enough CYA to have raised the CYA 80+ ppm (21 pounds in 30,000 gallons), and I am still below 40. I have not had a single algae outbreak, and everything has looked good all season. I jus can't figure out why the CYA is not coming...

    Antifreeze

Hopefully this is an appropriate place to post this. It has been a long time since I have been in the forum since this year has gone very well thanks to all the help from the TFP community. Thank you. It has been nice to spend the time enjoying the pool instead of trying to figure it out. I...

    obviously a TFP member

given the flood conditions all around and the perfect clarity of the pool, I am guessing this must be a TFP member - I think I see their TF-100 on the table there next to their Speed Stir

    Dolphin getting stuck

Our Dolphin is constantly getting stuck on top of the main drains. I do not mean due to the drain suction. It gets up on top of the drain cover that is meant to keep someone from getting stuck to the drain. Is there a way to prevent that? Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk

    does CYA affect FC?

Pool is crystal clear, autocover is closed except when I am checking things, zero bather load and I have passed OCLT. FC is up around 16, and I have been bringing the CYA to my target of 40. As I have brought the CYA up over the last week, it seems like adding CYA makes the FC go down a bit...

    corrosion issues?

I have been thinking of installing a SWG. But I have some lingering concern about corrosion. Specifically, I have steel walls behind the vinyl liner. And I have encapsulated rails below the coping for the Coverstar autocover. I think I asked about this before, but I could not find the old...

    CL Free?

A friend who builds pools recently suggested I consider a CL Free system. It says it uses copper, what I guess is an ozone system and controls pH with CO2. I am skeptical of adding copper due to the potential for discoloring my water. I think I have also read some things that pH monitoring...

    garden hose iron filters

I plan to purchase a filter to place on my garden hose this year to help keep the iron (and other things) down in the pool. I do not have a bunch of iron in my water, but I have seen light staining if I leave the hose running and sitting close to the steps or the bottom for a long time. I have...

Does the extra drop affect CC results?

I have read on here a couple times to keep adding R0871 during the FC test until you add a drop and get no color change, then subtract that drop. Won't that make your CC result low? It would seem that extra drop of R0871 would hang around unreacted and consume a little CC right when it is formed...

keeping the ladder to the slide clean

any suggestions how to keep the ladder to the slide clean? algae tends to grow on the steps, I suppose since there is no "fresh" FC-laden water on them all the time - it also tends to grow under the slide near the bottom of the ladder where water tends to collect during use - I brush it off...

    ALF sleeper cells

So I found a new place where the members of the Algae Liberation Force were training for an invasion. I have an in-wall ladder and corner stairs. Around the edges there is a rail that is screwed to them to hold the liner in place and seal around them. The rails have a little C channel that...

    testing for iron

TexasSplash posted this quote from chemgeek in another thread. I thought I would start a separate thread to avoid hijacking the OP. Does this mean that once the iron is oxidized, it is not detectable? If the oxidized iron is not detectable, can a sample be treated with some reducing agent to...

    Inconsistent test results if repeated

If I test FC more than once on the same sample, it seems like my first test is always 1ppm (2 drops) lower than the second and third tests which are identical. Every time when I finish testing, I rinse the cylinder and stir bar 2 or more times with RO water, shake them off and put them away...

    What time to start OCLT?

Sunset here is at 8:52 today in my location. Can I start the OCLT at 8:53 as quick as the sun is below the horizon? Or does indirect sunlight affect it meaning I should start later? If later, how much later?

Holy Black Cave of Death, Batman!

This summer it has seemed like my chemistry is never quite perfect. I always have a nagging low level of CC. And any unusual load on the pool results in a bloom. Thanks to TFP, I have been able to see them coming and kill them pretty quickly. But I can't quite get to where I feel like everything...

separate cyliders for FC vs TA/CH

Why does the TF100 come with a cylinder for chlorine only? I am ordering a sample sizer, and it says it works with the Taylor cylinders, not the ones that come with the TF100. I am also ordering a speed stirrer which comes with one cylinder. Do I need a second Taylor cylinder so I can...

    proper DE backflush prevents algae

Mods - if this should be in the pumping station section, please move it as appropriate I wanted to share a recent experience. I got on the TFP methods about a month ago (thankfully) after getting hit with a big algae bloom that I could not resolve with the pool store advice. Things have been...

timing of testing for FC and CC

I have read a few threads about the time it takes for the reactions to occur when testing for FC and CC with the TF100 and similar kits. And I have observed the return of the pink color given a bit of time after the color change is complete. I wanted to be sure I understood the most proper way...

What makes eyes burn? Smells like "chlorine? "

Wife says kids are complaining their eyes are burning after swimming. I also notice a slight "chlorine" odor. Chemistry seems fine to me. FC 7 CC 0.5 pH 7.5 CH 250 TA 130 CYA 40 Water is nice and clear. Thoughts?

    SWG with an autocover?

We have a Coverstar autocover with the rails embedded in the concrete below the coping. When we built the pool, we were advised against SWG due to the autocover rails and corrosion. Does anyone have any direct experience with this? I would love to switch to SWG, but obviously do not want to...

    evil Frog?

I thought I would start a new thread to ask this question. In my thread about green tinted water, SW commented "pull that frog system out pronto if you haven't already." I have seen a couple of other comments on the forums about the "evil" Frog systems. What is bad about them?

    green tint after SLAM

So after a week at shock level, I have finished the SLAM. OCLT is less than one, CC is 0.5 and water is clear. Thanks to all of you who helped me get started and work through my first SLAM. It is great to see the main drain covers nice and clear again! Latest testing (TF100 test kit) pH...

a thought about CYA during a SLAM

I wanted to share an observation from the SLAM I am doing. When I started, my CYA (as tested by the pool store) was 65. As the SLAM has progressed, the CYA has dropped to 40 and now 30. I understand that has probably not really happened. Even though I have been filling to replace the water...

    TA during a slam?

I am 48 hours into a SLAM. Here is my current chemistry using the TF100 test kit. Being new to the TF100, I also went by the pool store to confirm numbers, and our results were pretty close. FC 41 CC 1 CH 225 TA 290 CYA 40 I was working to a target FC of 26 based on a CYA of 65 done by...
