    Should we use "drop out?"

Hello. I will start by saying I have successfully maintained a TFP in the past, but we didn't open the pool last year and opened to a swamp this year. We started the SLAM process on Saturday. The pool has gone from a disgusting, dark green pond to a milky aqua color, so we are making...

    Model contract for re-plaster?

I have someone coming over today to look at my pool for a re-plaster job. I have been searching for someone to re-plaster for 4 years. There are companies in my area that do new builds, but no one who will re-plaster. I finally was put in touch with this person who used to work at a company...

Opening my swamp -question about the order chemicals

After reading someone else's post about cleaning a swampy pool, I wonder if I should set the pool to recirculate, add the chemicals to the levels I know I need based on testing, and plan to vacuum to waste in a few days and then add appropriate water and additional chemicals to compensate for...

Opening my swamp -question about the order chemicals

I test with the TF-100 kit. I knew I left something out. I can't find my paper I wrote the values on, and I don't remember what the TA is off the top of my head. I'll get that reported next time. I'm going to be away for the next 3 hours, but tomorrow and Sunday, I'll be able to dedicate big...

Opening my swamp -question about the order chemicals

Hello. We didn't open our pool last year b/c it really needs new plaster. We planned to have that done but couldn't find anyone to do it. (I've been trying to find someone for 4 years -- small town, two hours from any cities.) Anyway, we are opening a swamp. (And I may have found someone who...

    Chemical storage in the cold?

I won't store any chlorine. I buy it as I need it so whatever is left over will get used for cleaning inside. Aussieta - what do you mean by not keeping it inside? You mean inside the house? We currently keep it in our little pool house (our little building with the pump, filter, and hot...

Closing with a mesh cover & CYA question

This was our first year using TFP method, and the first year with nice clear sparkly water all summer. Yea! We want to close our pool, but the temp is not low enough yet. I've read the information on closing pools, but I still have a few questions. 1) can we do a "partial close" and go ahead...

    Chemical storage in the cold?

When you say keep the acid away from the chlorine, how far away is away. Same room, different shelf, or different rooms?

Still a newbie - checking back in with questions - a few concerns & black algae

Re: Still a newbie - checking back in with questions - a few concerns & black algae Bummer - I just came from brushing the pool, and there was definitely some new stuff that I brushed from the pits in the sides. I was able to pull up something that flaked off and it is surely the greenish...

Still a newbie - checking back in with questions - a few concerns & black algae

Re: Still a newbie - checking back in with questions - a few concerns & black algae Yes. I have read that. It's always good to go back and review. I guess I'll just keep my chlorine on the high end of my range and keep an eye on things. Thank you.

Re: Still a newbie - checking back in with questions - a few concerns & black algae Duraleigh - I received an email with your response, but for some reason, it's not showing up on the forum. So, here is Duraleigh's response and my answers: 1. I'm not sure how you can compare your costs quite...

Still a newbie - checking back in with questions - a few concerns & black algae

Hello, and thank you to those who have helped me in the past few weeks. Brief summary -- started TFP method around 6/6. Using the test kit I bought from TFP. My water looks great, and I have never seen it so sparkly. I was actually shocked (no pun intended) at how sparkly it was today. But -...

Switching to TFP method - first time to test using kit -

Want to check in to make sure I'm still on track and doing the right thing with testing. Pool math tells me I need to add 16 oz of bleach, 155 oz of baking soda, and 358 oz of calcium. Also, I'll probably need to add stabilizer, but I'm holding off on that per advice from you kind people. I...

Switching to TFP method - first time to test using kit -

Oh. Ok. So should I hold off on adding any more CYA until next week? Thanks! - - - Updated - - - And in the mean time just keep my FC between 2 and 4?

    Pool chemical safety

I've been posting on the Pool Opening forum and received great help. My water looks great and my FC and CC are great -- working on getting CYA up. Anyway, as I've been testing repeatedly and adding chlorine repeatedly, and now adding CYA repeatedly (because adding slowly), I have been wondering...

Switching to TFP method - first time to test using kit -

How long before a CYA reading will be accurate? I have added 5.75 lbs so far and will add the rest tomorrow -- supposed to add 7 lbs total assuming I did my math correctly. (I tested it tonight just out of curiosity b/c I had NO CYA before and I wanted to see if it would read something. It...

Switching to TFP method - first time to test using kit -

Just an update. I passed the OCLT test. My water is sparkly clear. (Too bad my pool surface looks so rough - water is so clean I can see every flaw.) I've been slowly adding CYA since last night (some in a skimmer sock and some hanging from pantyhose per what I read in other posts - seems funny...

Switching to TFP method - first time to test using kit -

Thank you. I'll be able to pick some up at the pool store tomorrow. I don't mind so much that I've gone through more chlorine than I needed to -- just got concerned when I read under Basic Pool Chemistry "Be careful if your CYA level is really and truly zero. When CYA is really zero you should...

Switching to TFP method - first time to test using kit -

So, I just added CYA, but I only had 1.75 lb and it looks like I need about 7lbs. Is this something that I should run out to WM for tonight or wait until tomorrow? How urgent is this? (Freaking out a little) - - - Updated - - - Nevermind - it's a moot point b/c I just looked online and it...

Switching to TFP method - first time to test using kit -

I just realized that I have messed something up. I have not added CYA. I was thinking that I wasn't supposed to do that until SLAM is complete, but I just went back and re-read what you've told me, and I see that I was supposed to add it once I got the CC down. I hope I haven't "broken"...

Switching to TFP method - first time to test using kit -

Out of curiosity, during one of my tests today, I tested, saved the water and tested it 4 hours later and got the same FC result. I'm not testing pH right now since I've been working on the SLAM and I read that isn't accurate once that process has begun.

Switching to TFP method - first time to test using kit -

So, in which direction would the numbers be wrong. My CC has been consistent for several tests in a row so you think the FC may have been higher or lower than the results showed? What is the guideline for how long the water can be held before testing? Thanks. I'll get the pool sweep going. I...

Switching to TFP method - first time to test using kit -

Update and just making sure I am still on track. Here is what has been happening. Yesterday I had to go out of town. Before leaving, here were my results: FC 9.5 CC 1 I added the little amount of bleach that Pool Math told me to and left town. While gone, my husband brushed sides of pool and...

Switching to TFP method - first time to test using kit -

Haha. He didn't get fired. He quit. :) I think I had convinced him of the merits of the TFP method, but he didn't want to mess with this level of testing. I am a reluctant pool owner - never wanted a pool, but here we are. Kids love it so that makes it worth it. I'm actually having fun...

Switching to TFP method - first time to test using kit -

Just want to clarify - as I am adding more chlorine to get it up to 10 ppm and testing/retesting, do I only need to be retesting FC, CC, and TC for now? Or just FC until I get it up to 10 ppm and after that also test for CC/TC? Current numbers: FC = 5.5 ppm CC = 1.5 TC = 7
