    Need to add CYA?

Which hardware store offers this? Home Depot? Sounds awesome.

    Need to add CYA?

Yup, live and learn. I swear I wasn't adding to much while I was doing it but I was wrong. I've been wrong before and I'll be wrong again. That's life. Worst case is I'll have to drain a bit and add some fresh water. Looking at the Chlorine/CYA chart on here, I think I'd like to shoot for...

    Murky water & green stains

I hear you. Any idea what the murkiness (when brushing) and green stains could be from?

    Need to add CYA?

Looks like I added too much. Be careful.

    Murky water & green stains

I'm using a nylon, metal-free brush. I believe the brand is Gorilla. My current levels: FC 6.5 CC 0.0 CYA ~85-87 pH 7.5 TA 70 CH 250

I should also add that my pH was 8.0 for a while. I have just lowered it to 7.5.

    Murky water & green stains

I should add that the water clears up. It doesn't stay murky. It's only murky when I brush.

    Murky water & green stains

I'm noticing a handful of green stains at the bottom of my pool. I recently bought the home and switched to a SWG. The plaster is old, stained, and really needs to be remarcited (it's cosmetic so I don't want to spend the money right now). Anyway, I think the green stains may have been there...

    My levels after some adjustments

Okay, thanks. I don't need to drain if my CYA is 85, do I?

    Need to add CYA?

The Instant Conditioner I bought at Leslie's worked great! It took my CYA level up from 55 to 85/87. I added with the pump running, waited several hours, and retested. I highly recommend it! I added about 1/2 the jug. Here's the link (although it's also available on Amazon)...

    My levels after some adjustments

I've added muriatic acid and cyanuric acid to balance the pH and CYA. Here are my current readings: FC 6.5 CC 0.0 CYA ~85-87 pH 7.5 TA 70 CH 250 So, I know I need to lower the FC. Everything else look good? We're entering the sunnier/hotter/humid/rainy season here in South Florida. Any...

    Pump run time

    Thanks for the link!

    Pump run time

Wow, really? 4 hrs/day even in hot/humid/sunny South Florida?! That'd be great. I guess it doesn't hurt to try. Maybe I'll turn down the run time and turn up the SWG % and see what happens.

    Need to add CYA?

Okay, will do. I'll post my results on here. I hope to add it later today.

    Pump run time

For those of you with SWG systems out there, how many hours a day do you run your pump? I have an older single speed pump. I'm currently running 8 hrs/day here in FLA.

    Pump run time

My pool is screened so the only debris I get are tiny bugs (still obnoxious). My electric rate does not fluctuate by time of day. But you're saying splitting the run time may be a good idea because that'll spread out the cleaning time in order to more effectively grab debris? Makes sense...

    Need to add CYA?

Haha, I hear you Jenischmeni! I didn't want to wait a week at all so I bought the liquid. The stuff I bought says it works instantly so I'll mix some in with the pump running, wait a few hours, and retest. Worth it to me to get everything stabilized. I just took over maintenance of the pool...

    Need to add CYA?

Okay. So I want to get right about 80 with a SWG correct? I watched the video you shared but my problem is that it's so hard to tell when to take the reading. It's so subjective. The video shows that you can't see the black dot at all so I'll slowly add until I can't see it at all...I feel...

    Need to add CYA?

I've mentioned it before but I'm not fond of the CYA test. I *think* my CYA level is 60-65. 60 is probably my best guess. I have a SWG that gets a lot of direct sunlight. The pool is screened. I assume I need to raise the CYA and should shoot for 80. What happens if I accidentally go over...

    Need to lower pH?

15K gallon pool SWG My levels: FC 5.5 TA 70 CH 250 pH 7.8 So, I guess I need to lower the pH huh? Maybe add 1 cup of muriatic acid (31.65%)? I added two cups yesterday. My pH was at 8.0 and dropped to probably 7.6, but now it's at 7.8. (I should mention I have problems with the pH color...

    Pump run time

Thanks. I see you recommend to start at 4 hours. Should I run the pump for X hours straight each day? Or, is it better to run it for a few hours, wait, then run it again (in order to spread it out over the day)? I heard it's best to run the pump while the sun is shining and affecting the...

    Pump run time

I apologize in advance b/c I'm a newbie. I love the helpful info in your Pool School section - I've read it and continue to reread and return to it. How long do you recommend running my pump? The pool guy recommended 8 hours/day here in the summer. Does that sound like too much? Keep in...

    Adjusting pH and TA

So, do you all consider these low total alkalinity claims to be untrue? Should I ignore them? http://www.poolwizard.net/problems/alkalinity.htm The low end of the range I see elsewhere is 80. In your opinion, a TA of 60 in plaster will not cause problems. I am seeing cloudy water when...

    Adjusting pH and TA

FYI - I'm using the K-2006 test kit. Your link is in reference to the TF100. Does it make a difference? I still add until the color of the sample no longer gets darker?

    Adjusting pH and TA

Ooooh. So, it's NOT when it FIRST changes color?! It's when it stops getting darker? And that applies for all of those color-changing tests? Dang. My CH is 250, although that's when the sample FIRST turned blue. I guess I need to keep adding so it's probably a little bit higher, huh? I...

    Adjusting pH and TA

Oh okay. I'm using Taylor's K-2006 test kit. When I add the 5th drop of reactant the sample starts to turn from green to a light shade of pink/red but then swings back and holds steady at green. It's not until the 6th drop that it turns pink/red and remains that way. That's why I'm going...

    Adjusting pH and TA

Okay. So Hayward's recommendation of 80-120 should be ignored? They're so much higher. I just retested. My pH is 7.5 and my TA is now around 50-60...let's call it 55. Should I raise the TA up a bit to say 70-80?
  28. D

    Adjusting pH and TA

My levels: SWG FC 5.5 TA 70 pH 8.0 CH 240 Does it matter which I adjust first (pH or TA)? I hope not, as I've already added 1 cup of muriatic acid (31.45%). It looks like you recommend a pH between 7.5-7.6. You seem to recommend a TA level of 60-80 but my Hayward SWG recommends 80-120 TA...

    CYA test with Taylor K-2006

I bought the Taylor K-2006 test kit and am loving it. Great kit! My only problem is with the CYA test. I have a heck of a time being certain of my accuracy with the CYA black dot test. Any tips out there? Should I be reading the CYA level once the black dot first completely disappears from...

Salt test strips vs. SWG reading

Are salt test strips really worth it when my Hayward SwimPure/AquaRite is taking a measurement of the salt content for me? Does anyone know how much more accurate? Does the AquaRite seem to read higher or lower?
