New hot tub and lost on chemicals

BTW I have a similar Intex pool as you and just saw your skimmer. Nice work on that. I have the Intex skimmer, which does a fine job but your implementation is much better.

    Makes sense, thanks.

New hot tub and lost on chemicals

Thanks all. One question. To be clear, you're suggesting to SLAM (FC target 12 ppm) after every use? Do you measure pH and then SLAM, or could I more or less assume my FC is in the 2-3 range after a bath, and always use the same amount assuming it's not multiple times a day? I'm fine with...

New hot tub and lost on chemicals

I settled to 7.6 and 40 TA. I’ll check in the AM and then if needed add baking soda to get to 70-80.

New hot tub and lost on chemicals

Wow that was a brick wall. Went from increasing from 7 to 7.9 in 15 minutes, with one additional drop of MA I ended up at 7.3 and 40 TA. So I’m going to agitate more, see where I end up on TA and use baking soda to get back to 70-80 if needed.

New hot tub and lost on chemicals

Thanks. Yes I suspected that on the last go around. The bleach says 5.25 on the label but the SDS online for it says 2.75-8%. I wasn’t sure before because the previous bathing loads could have consumed the FC before I had a chance to measure but this time I am quite sure based on what I’m...

New hot tub and lost on chemicals

Okay so I’ve added chemicals to target 30ppm CYA, 7.0 pH and agitating, and 5 ppm FC. Checked levels after 15 minutes agitation and got 3ppm FC and CC and pH 8.2. I’ve added a little more bleach and MA again targeting pH 7 and will repeat the process until my pH rise levels off.

New hot tub and lost on chemicals

Thanks guys I will reply in full in a bit once I process but quick question - I realized I had two bromine DMH tabs in a floater for about 10 minutes while starting to fill the pool. There is no concern with starting with Chlorine given this very tiny amount of Br in there, right? It shows 0.0...

New hot tub and lost on chemicals

So I have a 250G hot tub and figured it would be easy to learn the ins and outs of the chemical situation having cut my teeth on a new pool earlier this year. Well I guess I was wrong. I first tried bleach as chlorine and I would add a few oz to hit my 3ppm target but it was not showing any FC...

First time dealing with green algae

I did not but recently. A month ago I was at 300. Thanks for the tip, I have been using bleach to bring up FC in the past but for SLAM I thought we had to use the shock for some reason. I’ll use bleach every time from now on

First time dealing with green algae

Haha okay. Good to know. What is the Consequence of using cal hypo with hard water ? I’ll stop using cal hypo to maintain SLAM and only use bleach.

First time dealing with green algae

Thanks - so I did the SLAM targeting 24ppm FC and I also decreased pH to 7 so I’m more or less right on target there. I’ll follow three criteria for SLAM and leave CYA alone for now My previous mistake is that I fought it off successfully without SLAM but then my FC dropped to 0 without my...

First time dealing with green algae

By the way I added that much acid bc I am still trying to get my TA down, so I’ve been playing the game of knocking down pH to 7 and then agitating to bring up, repeat etc. I realize now I should have waited to do that but it’s been going up quickly lately bc of the algae so hopefully it’s not...

First time dealing with green algae

Hi all, I got this pool at the beginning of the summer and all went great until a few weeks ago. What started as a load of sawdust from neighboring construction has turned into a green algae bloom and I admit I don’t know what I’m doing. I was nearly out of the woods and then my SWG wasn’t...

    Newbie on SWCG - help!

OK so here is where I'm at today, I had not checked it since Friday... FC 0.5 pH 7.5 TA 200 CYA 40 On pH and TA I'm trending in the right direction. Will let pH increase again to 8 then knock it down with MA and that should bring my TA down to around 100. On FC, gosh. So I went from 4ppm to...

Finishing install of Intex XTR on clay soil - issues with sinking - can you jack it up?

Thank you @Casey @Windylou. The soil I backfilled with was very dry, although some areas got wet after. I'm going to try to let it dry out as much as possible, let it settle, add plastic sheeting away from the pool for 2' and cover in bark nuggets to absorb water and allow runoff. In theory...

:ROFLMAO: Well I feel like an idiot! I must have already checked out for the weekend. OK, I'm at 4ppm chlorine then. I'll check again this weekend and use bleach to get to 5ppm. Thank you Marty.

Thanks Ah well, I'm learning multiple lessons a day here. Until 15 minutes ago I thought I was using the 2006 test kit. Well... looking now I can see why it's not very accurate compared to the 2006 test kit, but it's what I have right now and I can't get ahold of a better kit for at least a...

Sorry @Dirk - my wife ran by the pool store with the instructions to pick up a K-2006 (Leslies 81329) but as it turns out, I just realized that what they sold her was not that. It's Leslie's "Total Poolcare DPD Test Kit" and all results have come from that (except my first post which was a test...

Thanks @Dirk - I thought I WAS going slow lol. Actually, I think I'm fine now. FC is darker than the 3-6 ppm and lighter than the 5-10ppm on my test kit, so I guess I'm around... 6ppm? pH holding at 7.1-7.2 CYA at 38ppm which is weird considering I thought I tested at 50 before and have added...

Ugh, lol. Darn it. Yet another learned lesson. I didn't realize that the Trichlor tabs included CYA. Blah. I know I undershot my CYA by about 30% in the first place when I added the liquid, so hopefully I didn't overshoot. I didn't realize that I needed to use Bleach or something. Well, I...

    Newbie on SWCG - help!

@Dirk I added CYA days ago, and it tested at 50 later that day. I am going to test again today and then add more after that, if needed. I'm giving the couple hours for the FC to completely disperse.

Alright, well I added some more chlorine tabs (this time I made it into a water solution first!), and will check CYA and FC in a few hours, adding CYA to get up to 70. I'm out of chlorine now but I think I added enough to get in the ballpark of 4-5....I will see.

Copy that, I'll add some chlorine in. I thought the target was 2-4ppm FC? Where should I be?

Scale is a huge issue here. I get scale on everything in the house. Shower door, espresso maker, "clean" glasses out of dishwasher, bathtub spigot... so I am not surprised to hear that's something I need to deal with. I'll get the MA and start playing. I'm also using pool math and it's...

I tested pH again, got 8.0 again and furthermore took 3 drops of 015 to get to 7.5, so that calls for 22oz of Muriatic Acid, I guess...does that sound right? It took 6 drops to get down to 7.2.

Correct, 2 of 007, 5 of 008, added 30 drops of 009 while swirling to get it to turn to very clear pink. I did not do CH. I was also surprised by this since the test strip showed TA off-scale low. But I now know those test strips are Crud so I figured it is what it is. Yes, I'm in CA - Santa...
