    Cyanuric Acid Reducer?

Thanks. I don't have too much CYA in my water (I'm running around 50), but a co-worker does. I myself was wondering about it because I was going on a 2 week vacation and was wondering if I could use tablets and have a 'quick and easy' way to get the CYA down if it got too high. Looks like this...

    Cyanuric Acid Reducer?

Over at Leslie's pool yesterday, I saw a bottle labeled cyanuric acid reducer. Anyone have any experience with this? Does it reduce cyanuric acid or is it a money grabber?

What do you do in Feb when it's 80 degrees outside?

Ahhh, the Tucson area weeds. Hubby's used 2 gallons of roundup so far. We have some goat heads coming up, and they are not good on the bike tires. Tend to pop them even just having the bike in the yard long enough to walk it out to the street! :D

    Bumpy bottom

Sounds kind of like the bottom of my pool. I also have sand under my pool, also have indentations. My Hayward aqua-bug seems to work pretty good; before that I had a zodiac ranger and it was okay, but the aqua bug is better for the bumpiness. The biggest issue is it doesn't always get the bottom...

Can algae even behave this way?

What kind of brush works to get the heads off, but is safe for vinyl? Pool school's instructions are for a plaster pool. My brush doesn't do anything but slide over the heads; I have to use the plastic on the end of the brush, a fingernail, etc, to scrape them off.

Can algae even behave this way?

I looked at the pool school stuff on black algae. Yep, since it's green when I scrape it up, it does sound like black algae. However, I do have an above ground pool so it's vinyl, and pool school says it's usually on plaster pools. Guess I'm special. But since I can't use a stainless steel brush...

Can algae even behave this way?

Yuck. That's what I was afraid of. I just took a DPD chlorine test, and have no CC, but if I can have algae anyway, no good. I have my CYA on the high side by design; I see you're in Tucson, you know how the sun burns the chlorine! But it also means that fighting algae is more difficult. The few...

Can algae even behave this way?

Hi. I have some strange black looking spots on the bottom of my pool that did not vacuum up. I was able to scrape a few off with my fingernail, and I could see that the little bit around and under my fingernail was actually dark green, not black. But my pool water itself is very clear, even...

    Liquid chlorine calculator

Awesome!!!! That is something that will be very useful. I already bookmarked it. I do have one suggestion - I noticed that you can choose 25 miles from your zip, and the next choice is 100 miles. I would suggest something between, probably 50. Those of us on the fringe of a metro area might not...

Why is basic water chemistry so controversial?

I know around here, the professional pool people who use chlorine gas to chlorinate do have the pool's cya on the high side, maybe even as high as 80, because it works for them to be able to really get the chlorine level high when they service it, and then the chlorine level doesn't get too low...

    "Instant liquid chlorine"

Now, that stuff just plain cracks me up. They take cal-hypo, put it in a bottle, and call it "instant liquid chlorine." :hammer: I looked at that; not such a bad deal - at wal-mart anyway - $21 for 4 lbs of 73% cal-hypo. Pretty good if your calcium's low enough you need some more calcium, or at...

    Ph creeping up

Hello, Generally I have no problems with Ph, so this issue surprised me. I chlorinate using Kim-Tec liquid chlorine usually, or Up & Up brand bleach if I only get over to Target and not Lowe's. I also occasionally use Kim-tec brand tri-chlor if my CYA needs to be raised. I just started with...

Splitting Hoses on Above Ground Pool

That's part of the reason I did PVC flex hose for the hose part of my set up, too. Pool hose, even the heavier stuff that came with the pool, just doesn't last in the AZ sunshine!

Yay for aqua bug & new plumbing!

Well, between my new Aquabug and new hybrid PVC /flex plumbing (which I described in a different thread), my system is working better than ever! Aquabug does seem to be a better vac that the disc-type Zodiac Wahoo (almost identical to the Barracuda Ranger) I had before. Doesn't seem to get hung...

    Hayward Powerflo LX or Matrix

Oh, and I have a 1 hp matrix. Love it for my 20ft diameter pool. It was really handy bring able to switch it from side to on top when I switched filters. Going on 7th season with it, no problems, even though I accidentally ran it dry once.

    Hayward Powerflo LX or Matrix

I switched from a cartridge to a sand. Don't regret it, even though we live in a fine dust area. It's a pain to take the cartridge out and hose it off, and in July and August (dust storm season$ we were doing that a lot. After 3 years, the middle seam on the filter housing wouldn't stop leaking...

Hybrid rigid PVC / Flex for soft sided AG pools with pictures

I just finished doing a hybrid rigid / flex PVC set up for my pool. Did it yesterday, turned on the pump today, no leaks. Thought I would share it because it's a good solution for us soft-siders, which could have too much stress on the pool fittings if totally rigid PVC were used. Some points...

    Pressure side or robot?

Yeah, decided to go with a suction cleaner after all - the aqua bug. Got a leaf canister to go with, as one of my main gripes with the suction vac before was I couldn't use it with the skimmer basket in, and the plate, so all leaves, bugs, mesquite pods, would get into the pump basket and it was...

    Pressure side or robot?

Hi! The disc and diaphram on my auto pool vac have both gotten rather rotten, be more expensive to fix than to get a new one. I was thinking of either a pressure side, Polaris 65, or a low end robot, the Pool Rover Jr. Anyone know which would be better for a pool with small ripples on the...

Anybody else's cat ever fall into their pool?

Cat did the funniest thing. I was at the swimming pool testing the water. She leaps onto the edge then steps onto the solar cover, which moves. So her front end is on the solar cover, her back end in the water. She manages to get all the way onto the cover, goes closer to the middle, lays down...

How can I tell if this is my pump fritzing out?

Got a gauge, reads constantly about 20 when the pump is on. Also found a suction leak. Think the problem is solved!!!!

How can I tell if this is my pump fritzing out?

At the beginning of last summer, after backwashing, I did not get the switch firmly back into the filter position. This allowed my pool to drain pretty low, until the water level was below the skimmer, and then the pump was running without water for several hours. I noticed last summer shortly...

Funniest/ most ridiculous thing the pool store has told you

Re: Funniest/ most ridiculous thing the pool store has told I've had a few people at work tell me that you have to replace the water every couple of years or algae will start growing and you can't get rid of it. I tell them that all they need to do is get their CYA to a good level and then use...

    So probably the dumbest question......

My pool water tends to be a little high on pH (Not bad, but with high pH fill water and high pH dust that gets blown into the pool, it tends to be around 7.6). I wear goggles. :-)

Funniest/ most ridiculous thing the pool store has told you

Re: Funniest/ most ridiculous thing the pool store has told Possible. IF - the bleach is fragranced, improved formula, etc. Of course, sounds like this pool tech didn't know that plain old everyday un-messed with, unimproved bleach is a perfect source of pool chlorine!
