Opening, but waiting for SWG, and filter cartridge question

Thanks! That's what I was expecting, and it's just good to get the confirmation that I'm on the right track.

Opening, but waiting for SWG, and filter cartridge question

After accidentally draining half the water mid-winter, I refilled the pool, vacuumed to waste, and added dichlor shock, because it's what we had and I knew it would need more CYA. The water went from pond green to a lovely light blue, but there's a whitish cloudiness to the water. I haven't...

chemistry with a drain and refill

Thanks so much! I am always amazed by how quick the responses are. - - - Updated - - - So I just checked Pool Math, and it says my pH should be 7.5 to 7.8. Why do I need to lower my pH a bit? What am I missing?

chemistry with a drain and refill

Verify the FC in a week? I was expecting you to say to verify the CYA level in a week. So once I add the CYA, is it ok to SLAM right away? I won't have time to complete a SLAM before I leave town, and my husband doesn't have a clue about how to maintain the pool, much less shock it. If...

chemistry with a drain and refill

We had a major wrinkle in our vinyl liner over the winter, so we drained the 27,000 gallon pool to about 1/3 of the way down into the diving well. Now that the liner is fixed and the water level is back up (after four straight days with a garden hose), I have tested the water. It has a fair...

    Please double-check my numbers

Thanks, linen. I'll see how things look in the morning, and perhaps post numbers again when I've finished the shock process. I'm looking forward to getting the hang of it so that it's comfortable and not time consuming.

    Chlorine chart?

Thanks for the suggestions. I ended up making a chart and keeping it in my test kit. Then I got a smart phone, and so I have the poolcalculator with me. It's marvelous. But I'm going to make a new chart and laminate it. Once things get balanced, a chart is simpler.

    Please double-check my numbers

This is my second season with TFP. Last year we bought a house with a neglected pool. Being totally frustrated by the ineffective and very expensive pool store suggestions, and becoming disgusted by the chemical soup we were concocting in our pool, I desperately began searching for help after...

    Chlorine chart?

Is there a printable chart somewhere that tells the increase of FC levels based on how much bleach you add? Perhaps I am lazy, but it's a long way out to the pool, and I have to walk back in to plug my numbers into the Pool Calculator, and go back out to add bleach. I have a dumb phone, so I...

    clean filter and/or continue shocking?

Well, there are four cartridges, so keeping four spares would be impractical. It's such a production to clean them thoroughly, but it bothers me to know they need to be deep cleaned and not do it. I guess I'll try to do a quick hose-down, and then deep clean them later on. Thanks!

    clean filter and/or continue shocking?

I am in the process of shocking my pool for the second time. Either I didn't complete the process the first time, although I thought it had met the three criteria, or I didn't understand and maintain the appropriate level of chlorine for my low CYA level after shocking. I have gotten better at...

Noob: No longer a frog swamp, but no sparkles

I have checked chlorine levels each day since I shocked, and adjusted the chlorine, but it had dropped to 3ppm yesterday afternoon, so I added more. Went out today at noon and had algae growing on the sides and bottom of the pool, and cl level of 3ppm. :( I added 64 oz CYA yesterday, because...

Noob: No longer a frog swamp, but no sparkles

I only added a little--less than 2 cups. That was on Sunday, I believe. According to my novice testing, the level seems to be about 25 today. Chlorine level was down to 3 at noon, so I don't know if that's because it's in full sun with low CYA, or if I should have continued shocking. I'm...

Noob: No longer a frog swamp, but no sparkles

Thanks, Linen. I added all the CYA I had--leftovers from the previous owner--but just a fraction of what Pool Calculator indicated. I figured I would finish the shock process first, and thought it would be good to wait a few more days and test again before I really started adding CYA, so that...

Noob: No longer a frog swamp, but no sparkles

I have now shocked my pool! It sparkles! It passed the OCLT the second night, and had 0 CC. The water is clear and blue. Test results this morning: FC 10 CC 0 TA 120 CH 320 pH 7.5 I think I'll test CYA again next week. I'm going to follow the suggestions for daily and weekly maintenance...

Noob: No longer a frog swamp, but no sparkles

Wow. I heard you guys were fast with the replies, but that was impressive. Didn't know about ammonia. I'll go tomorrow in search of a test. Our last pool store test (June 12) showed 24ppm of CYA. For whatever that's worth. Thanks!

Noob: No longer a frog swamp, but no sparkles

We bought the house with a pool that had been neglected since last August. The pool was a dark green frog swamp, home to over thirty frogs and innumerable tadpoles, and looked as thick as pea soup, but darker green. We started in early May with the pool store recommendations, which turned out...
