Getting ready for first fill and startup

This startup article mentions using sequestrant as soon as the pool is filled. Any reason not to do that? The CYA article says if you use the granular form (in a sock in the skimmer basket) you should not clean the filter for a week. During startup, I've read that new plaster can clog filters...

Getting ready for first fill and startup

Thanks for the help and suggestions! I am the builder (we used BYOP), so I plan to handle startup and all the chemicals. I haven't discussed startup with the plaster company, but I anticipate getting some guidelines from them (related to the warranty?). I won't bother to take my water to the...

Getting ready for first fill and startup

Hi all. We are about to plaster and fill our new owner-built pool later this week. We're super excited, but anxious! It's gunite, mini pebble, going to be salt after startup. I have a TF-Pro test kit (just arrived). Haven't ordered a pressure side cleaner yet (open to suggestions). Haven't...

Ongoing Owner Build Pool: Advice Needed

@ajw22, I'm sorry, but all I'm trying to do is understand what is recommended vs what I'm assuming or have read here or there. I'm asking all of this so I know what the right thing to do is and then I intend to do just that. Whether I do it myself or pay someone else, I would still want as...

Ongoing Owner Build Pool: Advice Needed

Regarding only 1 skimmer: It was a space issue in our yard/layout. I was told I need 3' of deck space behind the waterline for a skimmer. I have that in the deep end, so the skimmer is there. I don't have that in the shallow end adjacent to the existing patio or anywhere along the rear fence...

Ongoing Owner Build Pool: Advice Needed

You are wise to question my knowledge:geek:o_O, but I'm trying to tread carefully before stepping out alone. I've read a ton on this forum, so I'm kind of an expert now (just kidding;)). However, I'm hopeful that something like the attached installation manual is an adequate guide on it's own...

Ongoing Owner Build Pool: Advice Needed

@mas985: First, thanks for the help (I've read a lot of your stuff, so I know you know what you are talking about). Regarding my intent to use 2" for the skimmer and main drain: It seems reasonable to me that I would never have to exceed 84 GPM, however, I don't have experience with this. My...

Ongoing Owner Build Pool: Advice Needed

Thank you very much for the feedback! I will keep the heater bypass. I'm still curious if others (particularly those in warm states) see the advantage of having this be automated. I will keep the filter bypass. I've seen people recommend connecting the bypass line to a hose bib, so unless I...

Ongoing Owner Build Pool: Advice Needed

Thanks for the pics. That last picture of your spa is a bit intimidating, but I'm ok with a challenging and complicated project. Honestly, the appeal of a finished, working pool has turned out to be only part of the lure at this point. The learning and doing side of this project still has...

Ongoing Owner Build Pool: Advice Needed

We have an ongoing owner build in Fort Worth, TX and could use some advice. We finished the steel before the current ice storm and are about to start plumbing. Here's one of the renderings showing an overall view of the project: The equipment pad is going to be along the side of the house...

    How to configure expansion joint

What if I expand the width of the bond beam to include the first paver? This would result in a roughly 24" wide bond beam. Attach both the coping and paver to the bond beam, then introduce the expansion joint and then additional pavers after that? Has anyone seen that done?

    How to configure expansion joint

I agree 14" or 16" coping would be preferred to avoid this issue. It's not available in the material we (my wife) prefers. It was really hard to settle on the material choices, so I really don't want to start that process over again. We're done with pre-grade, so we're going to set the forms...

    How to configure expansion joint

Thanks guys. I picked a 2" overhang somewhat at random, trying to net something like 1" after finishing the pool. If I decided to minimize that, what would you consider the minimum overhang before tile/plaster?

    How to configure expansion joint

I am about to start construction on an owner-build, so I'm sure this is one of many questions I will post. We're getting close to excavation, so this question came up, which could alter the forms/bond beam design. We plan to use stone coping and stone pavers. The coping is 12" wide and 2"...

Saltwater Pools in the Winter Question

Thanks! I don't even have a pool yet;), but I have been reading a ton here on TFP. I'm planning to build my own pool after getting crazy bids back in October 2021, which are likely even higher now. I plan to start a thread to get help with my design very soon.
