    Water Bags ... Water Blocks

The reason for using water bags/blocks is safety. If someone fell in the pool when it is covered, they could pull the weights holding the cover down into the pool as they grab the cover struggling to climb out. A weight would sink to the bottom, possibly dragging the cover and person with them...

Why Does the pH of My Pool Constantly Drop?

I haven't added anything other than bleach and washing soda since opening several weeks ago. TA does creep up over the season and typically is a bit over 100 by the time I close in the fall. There is no autofill. The makeup water is mostly rain -- it's been raining regularly here. I can't...

Why Does the pH of My Pool Constantly Drop?

I use liquid chlorine -- the 182 oz bottles of Chlorox from Costco. I need to add between 1/3 and 1/5 bottle each day.

Why Does the pH of My Pool Constantly Drop?

I hear most people need to constantly add acid to their pools as the pH rises. The pH of my pool always goes down. I have never added acid and am constantly adding washing soda. Typical test results: FC: 3 to 6 ppm depending on the time of day CC: 0 ppm TA: 80 ppm CYA: 40 ppm pH: 7.4 I'll...

Now my DE filter is showing no pressure! - Bump up new ?

Re: Now my DE filter is showing no pressure! - new question It's also possible the pressure gauge is faulty. These gauges don't have a long life, but are not expensive.

    Trouble with Safety Cover Anchors

I also hit each anchor with a jet of water from a hose with a nozzle before moving them -- either opening or closing. This removes most of the grit and helps keep the threads clean. If you feel grit in the threads, remove the anchor and clean the threads before it gets so bad you can't remove it.

    Where Does This Pipe Lead??

Do you have a spa? It could be the return to the spa. Spa returns often have a check valve if the spa is higher than the pool. It is odd that there's no valve for this line.

Wiring 115v up to 230v for new pump. How can i do it?

Hire a licensed electrician. You want to this done properly and to code. I also wouldn't mess around with 230 V and a brand new pump.

The previous posters gave great advice. I want to add welcome to the forums and that pool looks gorgeous. I can't wait to see photos after you get it cleaned up.

    Return Flange Replacement?

Bama Rambler, thanks for the help. I was able to buy a new flange at the local pool store. As you said, removing the four screws and installing the new flange was easy. The liner stayed in place. The replacement took only a few minutes and went smoothly. Thanks for the help. It's great to have...

    Return Flange Replacement?

The plastic flange on the return of my pool cracked and about 1/4 of it fell off. The pool does not seem to be leaking now. How hard is to replace the flange without the liner moving? Am I better off replacing the flange or just leaving it? What's the best way to replace it? Thanks!

    24 hrs into conversion

Liquid chlorine should be added to the pool, over a return, when the pump is running. Adding chlorine to the skimmer will result in very high chlorine concentrations in the pump and filter. This is not good in the long term.

Liner Wearing on edge of Divot

I bought a house with a liner pool in 2007. The sellers gave me a receipt showing the liner was replaced a few months before we purchased the house. When we opened the pool the following spring, there was a divot on the ledge of the deep end. The divot is about 6" x 3" and about 2" deep. I have...

Bought a house...theres a hole in the backyard

I would remove the diving board and store it far away from pool until the pool is safe for swimming. Having a diving board over an empty pool is asking for an injury.

NEED HELP ASAP PLEASE - I think my pump is dead

I don't see a mention of the size of your filter. A 1.5 hp pump for an 11,000 gal pool seems way to big. For maximum efficiency, it's best to use an undersized pump and an oversized filter.

Backwash DE filter at closing or wait until spring?

As part of the closing, I backwash my DE filter. I then open the top, remove the grid assembly, drain the filter, wash off the grids with a hose, soak the grid assembly in a dilute solution of dish washing detergent, wash off the grids again with a hose, and finally reassemble the filter but...

Tip For Lowering an In Ground Pool

My pool has no main drain. This makes pumping out the pool to lower the water for the winter a problem. I tried using a vacuum head connected to the skimmer, but there was enough air leak around the hose in the skimmer that the pump started sucking air when the water level dropped below the...

Multiport Valve - Waste vs Rinse?

Thanks no-mas and PoolGuyNJ. This makes sense. So, Rinse is similar to Filter, except water is sent to Waste rather than returned to the pool. If you do this briefly after backwashing, any crud loose in the filter goes to waste rather than into the pool.

Multiport Valve - Waste vs Rinse?

I've been looking for a description on how multiport valves work and can only find general overviews. The question of Waste vs Rinse has been bothering me. Can any of the knowledgeable and esteemed members of this board educate me? When in the "Waste" setting on a multiport valve water flows...

    Hybrid Pool, Help!

Re: Plaster issues....going to paint LoraMae, rather than attach your question to this topic, you would get a better response starting a new thread. It sounds like you have a hybrid pool. There was at least on thread on this recently. Search for "hybrid" and you should find it.

    Vacuum suggestion

I have to vote against the PoolBlaster (in your Amazon link). I just returned my fourth one for repair in two years. The problem with them is the motor shaft seal. Grit in the pool water (and you only need the vacuum if there's something to vacuum) quickly degrades the seal. A failed seal allows...

    Pump Blowing Breaker Instantly

Thanks Tim23 for the suggestions. I was able to pull off the cover on the pump (after unplugging it). However, that end of the pump is very close to the wall of the pump house and it's hard to get a good look at the connections. There was about a tablespoon of white powder at the bottom of the...

    Pump Blowing Breaker Instantly

I just started opening the pool for the season. Everything was working fine when I closed in the fall. The equipment is fairly well protected in a small pump house, so I leave the pump out over the winter. All the equipment was installed well before I bought the house. I believe everything is...

Question about the need for calcium in vinyl pools

An inexpensive way to raise the calcium level is to use Cal Hypo as a chlorine source for a few weeks. Cal Hypo is a very cost effective source of chlorine. With a liner pool, there should be no problem in taking a few weeks to raise the calcium level. This is what I do. Standard warnings about...

    Skimmers Full of water

I'm not far from you (west of Philadelphia). I pumped my pool down 17" below the coping and put a gizmo in the skimmer when I closed. Given how much rain and snow we've had, I had to pump the pool down twice more so far this winter. When I pump down the pool I use a wet vac and remove all water...
