Pool will only drain to a certain point

Thanks. Great minds think alike ;). I ordered that same pump last night after seeing another recommendation here (perhaps from you?). Guess it can never hurt to have one on hand although I've only had a need to drain a lot of water one other time in about 6 years of owning homes with pools. But...

Pool will only drain to a certain point

Trying to do a partial water change. I am only able to drain the water so far via the main drain (maybe a foot below the skimmer opening), before the pump starts sucking air. The skimmer is off, of course. No amount of priming will get the pump to work again, until I refill the pool. I'm...

For anyone who's following this, the mental anguish is over :hammer:. A got an early black Friday deal on the AquaCal SQ225 143K BTU, $500 off. That plus free shipping and no sales tax made it hard to turn down, even though it's a bit more than I wanted to spend. I might be able to heat my...

The difference between a 143K and 121K unit is about 16%, so all else being equal, I'd have to run a 121K unit 16% longer than a 143K unit to achieve more or less the same results. If that's correct, it doesn't seem too bad. But a 7.1 CoP vs a 6.5 CoP is 8.5% more efficient, which should...

Yikes, now we're over $6k. I was just telling my wife this morning that we'd probably be around $5k. I do like the 7 year warranty on the AquaCals though. I assume that's using the pool cover. I was expecting a much higher cost/month. Thanks very much for the detailed info, this is exactly...

Ok, now we're getting somewhere. You're in a similar climate, I'm just south of Vero Beach. You keep your pool at 89 all winter, even in Dec and Jan?

I do understand that, and did exactly that when I replaced the filter recently. It's fairly easy to calculate the filter size based on the number of gallons in the pool, and I doubled that. But we're not talking a lot of money there. My SWG is also 2x oversized. Heaters are a different ball...

Yes, and I didn't find it particularly helpful. Every single model shows the swim season from March to September. The swim season down here is May through October without a heater. It's certainly not taking climate into consideration although it asks for my zip code. The only difference in all...

And therein is the problem. I know the pool size and I know the climate. What I don't know is how to calculate the BTU's needed, if there even is such a calculation.

Yeah, I know but I've already raised that possibility and it has a very low WAF. Depending on how much the heater increases our electric bills, it might be an easier sell down the road. I was going to try one of those water additives that claims to help reduce evaporation, but I've seen mixed...

James, Thanks for the recommendation, I appreciate it, but this is a trade-only unit. I am going to install it myself (I know what I'm doing when it comes to that). Really think I need a 140K unit in this climate with a 11,000 gallon pool? Looking at $5k for a Hayward or $4750 for a Raypak...

We just moved about 100 miles north but the climate here isn't significantly different where we were for 30+ years. So, generally it's in the 70's during the winter months, sometimes in the 80's. It can dip into the 50's or even 40's but those periods usually don't last long and a HP wouldn't...

Yes, thanks but I understand that, but at some point I would be paying for unneeded capacity. I don't know where that point is. Which is why I was hoping someone in this type of climate might be able to say what works (or doesn't) for them.

Electrical capacity isn't a problem, and in the grand scheme of things, none of these units are going to put us on welfare for the rest of our lives. I don't want to spend more than necessary though (or not spend enough and be disappointed), but at some point I'd think there would be diminishing...

Recently bought a house in the Vero Beach, Florida area. Pool is approx. 11,000 gallons, in-ground. We're not here most of the summer when a heater is unnecessary. Running in the pool helps my wife's arthritis so we'd like to extend the usable season as long as possible. The pool would be...

Do I need a check valve?

Thank you again. The pump is above the pool, filter is (will be) a new 200 sq in cartridge filter.

Do I need a check valve?

Ok, thank you! So given this, does a check valve on the pressure side make any sense at all?

Do I need a check valve?

It's your opinion because...? I know I can do what I want. I asked here because I'm not sure what is best and looking for advice. Not just do or don't, but the rationale behind the advice. The sprinkler system at my last two houses uses well water, and both have a check valve on the intake...

Do I need a check valve?

If I have air bubbles coming out the returns I've got to have a suction side air leak, right? A leak in the pressure side would be evident as water would be shooting out at the faulty joint, valve or whatever (assuming the leak was aboveground). Sometimes the pump will eventually prime on its...

Do I need a check valve?

On the outlet side? That wouldn't prevent the water from draining out of the pump and back into the pool, if there was a leak in the intake side, or perhaps a bad seal on the pump basket lid.

Do I need a check valve?

The question remains though: is there any reason to have a check valve? Relatively cheap insurance against some future problem, or a waste of time and money?

Do I need a check valve?

Apparently its a valve that doesn't completely shut off the flow. Maybe obsolete, I don't know. If the valves with grease cups were done away with 30 years ago, then these are definitely the original valves. I'm just going to replace them.

Do I need a check valve?

Sorry, no it's a Superflow. Yes, it shuts off. I'm using the default schedule, which I believe runs 12 hours. I suppose I could (or should) run it 24/7 when we're gone, but clearly there's a leak somewhere and it's going to bug me until I fix it.

Do I need a check valve?

I cleaned and lubed the basket lid o-ring when I rebuilt the valves. At low speeds there's some air (which I understand is normal), at high speeds, no.

Do I need a check valve?

Perhaps a dumb question, but can't hurt to ask. New (to us) house, built in 1992. Water bubbles coming out the returns. Existing valves are Jandy, I believe non-positive, They were dry as a bone so I replaced the o-rings and broken grease cups. Also cleaned and lubed the pump and filter...

    Old Hayward or newer CircuPool

No. There's a dumb timer on the pump (Pentair single speed) but I'm going to swap that out with a fairly new Pentair Superflo VS I also recently installed at our current home. So no integrated automation. I'll take a look at the Hayward board next week. Thanks for the tips.

    Old Hayward or newer CircuPool

Thanks. I won't be able to do any of that now until next Wed. I think it's a pretty safe bet, given the lack of maintenance in some other areas of the house, that the cell has not been replaced anytime recent and is due. Going on that premise, would there be any reason to keep the Hayward...

    Old Hayward or newer CircuPool

I installed a CircuPool RJ-30 about 9 months ago. Working great, very happy. We just bought a house that has a Hayward Aqua Rite system of unknown age. Says the salt level is 300, cell is getting voltage but 0 current. Flow sensor is working correctly. I'm assuming the cell needs replacement...
