    Stabilizing PH with Borates

You will add 2 gallons every 2 weeks in Jason's example, I believe. Less frequent but more when you add.

A Very Special Post Just Appeared on the Forum

Jason, You keep this site one of the best (best one I know) run on the Internet. Thank you for all your hard work. It is a great forum.

The boric acid is in the water!

Since you are in Houston I can recommend to go get a 55 lb bag at AAA chemicals. It was 70$ and that amount should be about perfect for your pool size. I did it and I am very pleased with the result. You will want to call in advance - the place can seem a little disorganized if you just show up...

How to keep your little swimmers from getting burnt?

We use swim shirts for the kids all the time and try to limit the time outside between 11 AM and 3 PM. The sun is so much stronger in that period. We still use a little SPF 50 on their noses and cheeks but that's it - and they have very light skin...... This way we also avoid lots of sun screen...

    Pebble Sheen and LED Lights

Robbie, All the pictures are from my pool which is PebbleSheen Prism Blue. It seems Ocean Blue is very close. We also like the shiny abalone shells (hard to see in this picture). I don't know if it will match your decking but it actually has a few red specks as well (you can only see them when...

    Pebble Sheen and LED Lights

Thanks a lot for the nice words, maxepr. I also think the plaster company did a nice job. I clearly remember how hard the plaster color decision was for us so I just wanted to try to give something back to this great website and post pictures of the finished product. As many of you know, colors...

    Pebble Sheen and LED Lights

OK, I shot a few pictures this afternoon and just now after dark. We looked at many pools before we decided and the final two were Ocean Blue and Prism Blue. They are very close but Ocean Blue seem a bit more gray in the shallow water. Blue Granite seemed very gray and frankly a bit boring...

    Pebble Sheen and LED Lights

We have the Prism Blue PebbleSheen and IntelliBrite LED's. I will try to take some pictures tonight. I think it looks great but wait and see.

First test results water out of the faucet

Did you make sure to wipe the bottle tip when counting drops for TA? My first TA analyses were also very high until I also followed that little bit of advice. The drops became bigger and the TA number smaller.....

Friendswood pool build - almost there......

I was a little unsure about this part myself but it seems that it is perfectly normal to plaster the PebbleSheen one day (this was done Saturday) and then acid wash 1-2 days later (this was done Monday). They started filling immediately after the acid wash. From what I have read and heard, the...

Calculating the price to add borates

Uups, I don't know why I had that one confused. Of course the TA is taken care of earlier in the process and I guess regardless of the borate source. Thanks for clarifying so not to confuse others.

Friendswood pool build - almost there......

Thanks, stipoolnoob. We are enjoying it every night after work. The kids love it but DW still thinks it is too cold - only 85F..... Maybe August in Houston will be warm enough for her - otherwise I foresee getting a huge gas bill over the summer....

Calculating the price to add borates

I see many advantages in using the boric acid. Price is nearly identical and you don't have to wait for aeration, spend money running all water features, risking too high or too low pH during the Borax/MA process, handling strong acid (muriatic) etc. The price difference - if any - must by...

Friendswood pool build - almost there......

Re: Friendswood pool build - We made it.... Finally there :-D We filled the pool two weeks ago. It took 16 hours through 3 hoses. The kids jumped in the pool the first day and we have been swimming every night since then. The temperature quickly made it above 80F which is very comfortable...

    Location of salt cell (IC60)

Good to know. You definitely want to make sure they are in the right order, I guess......

    Location of salt cell (IC60)

We are in the start-up process and have not added salt to the system yet. While reading all the different manuals, I noticed that Pentair says "ALWAYS install the IC60 AFTER the filter and heater" I can certainly understand that the salt cell should be protected from dirt etc so after the filter...

Built in gas grill - recommendations?

Sorry to hear about that DC. I think that sounds outrageous for the price tag that those Viking grills come with. It was at least twice the price as far as I remember. So we got the Napoleon and it seems fine - it has not been installed yet but I will follow up.

    Sticker Shock

Just-a-pb With the quality of pools you build you certainly don't need to advertise.  I fully agree with you that quality costs and more often than not you find that the cheapest offer is not the best offer in the long run. Small details may make you smile everyday or frown...

Friendswood pool build - almost there......

Thanks, shakenbake. It will still be a week or so before the decking tile and landscaping is done but right now the water fill is the big goal (tomorrow). The equipment pad is actually not so bad when you get closer. I did ask for 45 degree angles - it may make it look more chaotic. I later...

Friendswood pool build - almost there......

Thanks for the nice comments, Mats. We are also from Scandinavia (Denmark) so we prefer the lighter colors. The ledge will hopefully be good for the little kids - there will be a little bubbler in the middle and we have three umbrella sleeves up there so we can hopefully keep them in the shade.

    Sticker Shock

Sounds reasonable with the size and travertine coping + decking. It is a fairly large deck. You should be able to get the costs itemized. You will probably find that the decking+coping (if it is good quality travertine is at around 40% of the price) You should check references and see the...

Built in gas grill - recommendations?

Thanks for the input. We went with a Napoleon. It had gotten good reviews in the forum that Nightmare pointed to. We also looked at DCS which had gotten very good reviews but it did not have a thermometer(!) and only 2 burners. The Napoleon is made in Canada so I hope the quality is OK. They...

    Fossil rock for coping

We are using a white limestone for our coping - there are even a few fossiled leaves etc in them. What we have heard (not tested yet as we are still a few weeks away from initial fill) is that the harder and denser the stone, the better it will hold up. I am sure a penetrating sealer will also...

Built in gas grill - recommendations?

We have decided to add a small outdoor kitchen to our pool build. It will be fairly simple - about 6.5 ft straight along a brick wall. In order to get a little bit of counter space, we intend to get a grill no more than about 30" wide. It will be run on natural gas. We have looked at Weber...

Pebblesheen start-up - when to jump in?

It sounds like waiting a few days would be reasonably safe assuming the kids don't bring the hard and heavy toys into the pool. I could see the dirty feet happening but we could have a little clean-off basin on the decking if they have been in the dirt. I just have a feeling that not allowing...

Pebblesheen start-up - when to jump in?

We will be filling our pool in a few weeks for the first time and I have been trying to figure out when it is recommended to jump in. From Pool School it says (rather clearly :) ) not to swim during the break-in period but on the other hand I have read about people jumping into their new...

    Is shocking necessary.........

So you are saying that as long as I have a reasonable FC, the chloramines will get broken down even though it may take some time after heavy bather load, right? Does UV light not really matter, then or does it just speed up the breaking down of CC's? It is really good to hear that bather waste...

    Is shocking necessary.........

Perfect. That was what I was hoping for. I can't wait to get started and I actually look forward to getting to 'know' the pool, i.e. learning how I can keep the numbers in check just by adding acid and adjusting the salt cell to the desired output (okay, perhaps a bit more after serious...
