The Zodiac "Barracuda" MX8 Suction Side Cleaner

Ours is running for the first time right now. We're on the middle pressure setting and are rather impressed with this thing. Only downside is that we don't have enough hose. Need about two more sections. Off to order a couple more, hoping that I don't have to get a full set. :D

    VAC and then Chlorine?

I'm with these guys. Just did two runs of vac to waste, did the opening shock and the pool is lookin' good. :D +1 on not letting your pool kick you around. I started early this year and the reward is not having to drain the thing.

Thanks for the tech (Dave)and idea (zea3). I'm maintaining the shock and will pull the filter apart once I get a gasket. That brings up a new question: This filter is an old Anthony Apollo and I figure the gasket will be trashed when I pull this apart. Is there a recommended site for parts...

New numbers, might need some direction

Well, I still have some work to do. TC dropped a total of 3ppm overnight. pH is at 7.8. The water looks so clear it'd be invisible if it didn't refract light. We haven't had anyone in it since I began this testing, however we had a huge dust storm mid-week. (I have to head out for a bit but...

Hey folks. I took the readings last night shortly after dark, and this morning before the sun hit the pool area. Both are averages of three runs through the FAS-DPD test. Last night: 42+1=43, so 21.5 (Yeah, I spiked the chlorine to make sure I killed everything...) This morning...

Hey chem geek. I'll be starting that test tonight. We'll see in the morning I guess. Thanks again.

Let me see if I have this right: The hit of DPD makes the chlorine visible, the 0871 measurement shows me how much chlorine is available to fight in teh absence of ammonia/organics, and the R-0003 acts like ammonia and other organics do in the actual pool? I am only at 7.5 FC (with barely...

Anon: I thought that CC was held over by CYA for the sake of 'reserving' chlorine to replace what gets lost over time. Obviously I need to figure that out more. Just tested: FC 6.5 CC .5 Bear in mind it was about 100 degrees today and the pool gets full sun as the palm only overhangs a...

Roger that, thanks Dave. So far #1 is true but to see about #3 for sure I need to head out and check my numbers after I put my daughter to bed. Hopefully we'll be okay to dip this weekend.... I thought CC was determined by CYA. What am I missing here?

Thanks Sportsman, and howdy right back at you. With our initial fill having been 350 I had my work cut out for me. I paid $12 to fill it so I won't complain about chem costs, or aeration if ever I need to build a pipe. Heck, I already have the pipe and compounds.

New numbers, might need some direction

Thanks for the idea. I know it was losing half its FC per night when it was high (I had it at 20 for a few days to make sure I was whacking the algae) but it only lost 2ppm since Monday night. I'll hit it every night without adding anything and report back. Thanks again! anonapersona: I'm in...

New numbers, might need some direction

Hey all! I've been using all manner of heck out of my TF100XL kit. We're on the tail end of shocking after the algae mounted its last challenge. Here are my numbers: FC 8.5 CC 1.5 TC 10 (well, duh, yeah...) Ph 7.7 CYA 25 TA 200 (yes, two hundred) CH 240 Chlorine is high since we're...

    On the right track??

I can't offer anything aside from adding a +1 to getting the TFT kit. This is our first pool, and the full kit has been a huge help in trend analysis of each little bit of chemistry that we try, especially when we gave the water its first real shock. This site has been a huge help as...

Do I need to acid wash? Edit: Now clean, with pics!

Thanks! We plan to break it in asap after reading about using a small amount of my pre-TFP-purchased trichlor to raise CYA a bit. Looks like we can treat it and hop on in for now and get the stabilizer on the next wally world trip.

Do I need to acid wash? Edit: Now clean, with pics!

Thanks much. I was in a real jam until coming here. This is quite a great site. What's next is getting my CYA up (not registering yet, it's so low I'll have to boost chlorine, which is at 2ppm now) to keep my chlorine alive, and some scrubbing here and there. We're also going to get an...

Do I need to acid wash? Edit: Now clean, with pics!

One pic turned out to be all that was necessary: Not a crack to speak of, thank God. (Edit: No new crack. The one in the pic is from years ago.) Due to us being gone on the weekend nothing was added after Friday evening, so zero chlorine shows up on the kit. I just added what...

Re: Do I need to acid wash? Plaster pool w/interesting stains Update time, since it's been filling for a few hours and I'm a bit beat: I felt an 8' x 10' area of the pool surface actually pushing up from the concrete when I went in this morning. I jumped back and found no damage. No cracks...

Re: Do I need to acid wash? Plaster pool w/interesting stains Just spent 45 minutes with the blaster. Good news, bad news, other news: Good news: Almost everything comes off! I'm at the top of the deep end at less than an hour invested. Also, very little plaster damage. Lastly, some VERY...

Re: Do I need to acid wash? Plaster pool w/interesting stains Hey folks. I'll be home in a few hours and will finish the pressure wash to allow for the refill. Is there anything I need to do to the system before starting the refill? I plan to clean the pump strainer and the DE filter, but...

Re: Do I need to acid wash? Plaster pool w/interesting stains Thanks for your candor Bruce. I've cleaned it up and still don't see any cracks, so at least it won't fall in this year :D There are several lines in that spa, and all are algae lines. I test-ran the pump in there, then switched...

Re: Do I need to acid wash? Plaster pool w/interesting stains Can you tell me where you think it's delaminating? I'd like to think we can get whatever the power washer doesn't remove with shock and brushing later. I know the pool won't look brand new when the refill is complete but want to...

Re: Do I need to acid wash? Plaster pool w/interesting stains Power washing it is. Glad I bought the Karcher a little while back. Thanks Jason. Darn appraiser. lol, no use crying over spilled Morgan I figure. The bottom does look old, as it's remarkably smooth. I guess it was maintained...

Re: Do I need to acid wash? Plaster pool w/interesting stains Thanks for the confidence Melt. It looks better after drying out a bit. Details: The plaster isn't sandpaper-rough, actually quite smooth on the floor. That floor was brush-only btw. I only used the pressure for a bit below the...

Re: Do I need to acid wash? Plaster pool w/interesting stains MITS: Thanks for the fast response and tech. I just pulled in the drive and moved the pump into the deep end near the muck, which is more shallow than expected. More clear water than anything else. Also, much of the buildup on...

Do I need to acid wash? Edit: Now clean, with pics!

Quick description of my situation: We bought the house in 2008 and were told it had a two-year-old plaster refinish on its surface. We didn't plan to use the pool for at least a year (repo house = tons of work with little free time) so we simply added trichlor when the water went cloudy. When...

Thanks for the tips. Sounds like what we found: Stainless brush, leaf rake, leaf skimmer. I have two boxes of DE and about 15 1-lb packs of Kem-Tek powder (40% trichlor). FYI I dropped in five packs of the powdered trichlor to clear the water a couple of days ago, and while the water cleared...

Good morning and Happy Independence Day! I'll get info when I get my bearings in the pool house. So far all I know is that it's plaster, has a furnace and three pumps, and needs the bottom cleaned. Badly  I saw the kits mentioned. I have strips but didn't know they don't cover the...

New bilge, I mean pool, owner (KenV)

Greetings all. We picked up our first house in late 2008, and they had emptied/cleaned/refilled the pool. While we worked on other projects (old house) we had no time to swim and kept the sucker chlorinated and killed off the occasional greening until I fell ill in mid-2009. During those...
