ASR - Concrete Cancer - Austin, TX

Thank you. We used gunite and not shotcrete as the poster above stated it’s much less likely to get ASR…also had my engineers review the whole process.

ASR - Concrete Cancer - Austin, TX

Just finished my rebuild after discovering ASR three years ago. Was a complete nightmare the whole time. Now, happy with the new build and was able to make a couple adjustments I should have done on first pool. So nice to have my backyard back. Hopefully those of you with this issue get it...

    ASR Issue - Austin, TX

Hi, I discovered my issue with ASR three years ago. Apparently I was one of the first discovered In Austin. Ironically enough, my new pool is filling up as I type this. A three-year nightmare coming to an end…and a good one thankfully. Feel free to DM me for contact info. Happy to share my...

    Umbrella sleeve size

Thanks for the comments and image. I haven’t really tested an umbrella in one. I guess 6” would be sturdy enough for a day or weekend. I didn’t know if there were “tough” ledge umbrellas that required more depth.

    Umbrella sleeve size

Final detail. :) One builder told me he uses a 7.5” sleeve….current builder said they always use 6”. Both don’t care which I choose, I just want to make sure I can put any umbrella the Mrs finds into it. Do all umbrellas fit into the 7.5? Curious if anyone has an opinion on this. Thanks!

Trying to find a smooth plaster finish.

We used Wet Edge on our first pool and really liked it. It was as smooth as a basketball court and no slipping. However, currently in central Texas there are limited applicators for this and they are not very responsive. How smooth is quartzscapes? I’ve also heard Pebble Tech has a smooth...

ASR - Concrete Cancer - Austin, TX

I was lucky and got advice for my local lawyer from a partner who specializes in insurance law and told my lawyer a couple things to do…unfortunately he would never take a “small” case like these…but what he did it helped get us in mediation in weeks not months. I’ve heard there 60+ cases and it...

ASR - Concrete Cancer - Austin, TX

There were a total of seven core samples taken.

ASR - Concrete Cancer - Austin, TX

It was shotcrete and it looked the same. Plaster spider cracks when it fails…it doesn’t do this from my two years of ASR school that I didn’t voluntarily attend. Posting pics causes more PTSD.

ASR - Concrete Cancer - Austin, TX

Not me. That’s was my biggest worry. You can see by pics, this wasn’t a “small” problem. The pool was/is attached to my home foundation. Unfortunately it took good attorneys and mediation. No fun. No bueno.

ASR - Concrete Cancer - Austin, TX

The engineer hired by my pool builder’s insurance company did core samples. Zoom into image and look at seating ledge by patio, that’s where I saw first crack. You can also see one on tanning ledge. They started popping up all over after this.

ASR - Concrete Cancer - Austin, TX

I’m rebuilding my pool because of this. Absolute craziness for two plus years. ASR confirmed In shotcrete. They didn’t use fly ash. Was highly preventable. Insurance/lawyers/new builders…pool had to be ripped out and replaced. New gunite (not shotcrete) was finally poured last week.

Very long hairline cracks shotcrete shell

The heat is brutal in Texas. We poured last Tuesday until evening and I’ve had soaker hoses on my beam around entire pool and spa non-stop. Engineers said to keep it that way for two weeks minimum with the sun landing on us. Curing is a critical step to strong concrete. Found this link on TFP...

Gunite complete, but pool looks different from the plans

I’m an art director. It bugged me when I first saw it against your drawing. Then looking at it alone. It looks really good! Will be a nice one. :)

    Efflorescence during curing?

Im reading it is ”Primary Efflorescence.” It is said to be aesthetic and not structural. Sounds like you can clean it when it dries and after curing. A pool builder friend said not to drain the pool. I am anyway and just keeping it hydrated throughout the day now.

    Thanks, I’m doing that.

    Efflorescence during curing?

Hi all, I posted earlier where I read continuous hydration was a good thing for curing. I started using soaker hoses about 12 hours after gunite. I went to drain the few inches at bottom of pool tonight and I see this white stuff all over bottom. Is this scale or efflorescence? I’m now assuming...

    Gunite Question

I’m watering my Gunite for my new pool shot Tuesday in Texas. 112 degrees. We started 10 hours after pouring. A pool builder buddy helped me place soaker hoses around beam walls and there is a nice steady drip for 24hrs. I’m going to run it likely 10-14 days with this heat. It’s perfect how...

    Glacier Pool Cooler plumbing

Anyone have one of these? My previous pool did and we are putting one in a new build. The plumbing is running to bottom center of pool as instructed for new build. I got an email from tech support to just put a drain cover over the top. I currently have two A&A drains in the pool. I was...

Size of opening for spa overflow?

I tried that. Specifically bought a new variable speed pump just for it and thought I was a genius. But, after playing with speed for a couple days it was shown a sheer doesn’t “sheer” unless it’s at x speed which is a good amount of water (higher speed) Otherwise they just trickle down the...

Size of opening for spa overflow?

Here’s a video. Sorry at night and enjoy the floaties. :) You can see both sheers in background as floats go by. Thanks again for your feedback!

Size of opening for spa overflow?

Thank you for responding. I’ll try and find a video. But yeah, the 36” shears x 2 placed ~3ft high on wall were pretty darn loud. And from what I’ve seen in the couple pools with scuppers is they seem much softer sounding and are closer to pool. These would be only @ 2ft from water….let me try...

Size of opening for spa overflow?

For scuppers…we are looking at five 8“ box set across the 52’ wall. Is there ever a reason the run each scupper individually? For example one is flowing slower than the others….or is this a rare occurrence and not to worry about it?

Size of opening for spa overflow?

Thanks for this thought. We’ve been looking at flow to ensure we can adjust it. Something that’s difficult with shears to work properly.

Size of opening for spa overflow?

My neighbor has six in a smaller area and they sound good/soft. As opposed to the 36” shears that were very loud. We do have speakers nearby, we just like natural water sounds. I also like the looks coming off the wall. Mine will be about a foot higher….so about 2’ 6” off water…not sure how much...
