New Pool Owner - Above Ground

It's been a lot of work (and taken a lot of acid), but my TA is down to 175 (started at 400)! And I'm only getting minimal iron in my filter (along with small piles of rust I have to vacuum each day). So it is do-able.

New Pool Owner - Above Ground

Making progress (I think). After 2 gallons of muriatic acid and about 80oz of bleach, I'm at: FC - 6.5 CC - 0 pH - 7.2 TA - 325 CH - 375 CYA - 42 I'm aerating the pool via the return pointed high enough to break the surface of the water to (hopefully) get the pH back up high enough for another...

New Pool Owner - Above Ground

I knew you'd get my crime scene reference when mentioning that the guys at the store were gonna give me weird looks. :D "Uhh, yeah, I've had an ummm accident, and I need all the muriatic acid you have in stock. And a shovel."

What should be my first goal? Add recommended quantities of muriatic acid to begin the process of lowering TA (along with pH)? From all the reading I've done tonight, it seems it will take a few weeks of dosing with muriatic acid (and aerating to naturally increase pH) to begin knocking the TA...

New Pool Owner - Above Ground

Tested the TA again and got 375. Too late to go grab some muriatic acid, but I did point the return so it breaks the surface and creates some pretty good bubbles. We were low on bleach, so I dumped in a bag of the super shock I bought when I bought the pool. I'll grab bleach when I get...

Finally got my K-2006 test kit. Here's what I have: FC - 3.5 CC - .5 pH - 8.0 TA - 400 CH - 240 CYA - 40 Water is still crystal clear, with only the occasional small pile of rust in the middle of the pool. Any thoughts on anything I should do to adjust...or just leave well enough alone?

New Pool Owner - Above Ground

The deck gets built this week. I work at home full-time, so it's gonna be a serious case of a watched pot not boiling. Hopefully the builder doesn't get annoyed with me going out to check on his progress every 10 minutes. :D Hopefully my friend who is an electrician gets out here this week as...

New Pool Owner - Above Ground

Other than a few clumps/lines of rust that I was able to easily vacuum up, water is perfectly clear this morning. Now if only the deck was done and surrounding the pool instead of a mud pit. I did order the Taylor K-2006 test kit and will report back with numbers ASAP.

New Pool Owner - Above Ground

It's tempting to just dive in with how clear the water is now. But the ground around the pool is dirt and mud from the digging and prep work for the deck. Already have a few sets of mud-caked shoes drying on the patio. Lol Just ordered an extra cartridge for quick and easy swaps. So much more...

New Pool Owner - Above Ground

It's a cartridge filter...and you should have seen it when I cleaned it for the first time tonight. Holy rust! Cleaned the filter, put it back in, and started to use a vacuum setup to clean the rust off the bottom. Couldnt figure out why, after about half-way through, I kept losing pressure in...

New Pool Owner - Above Ground

Can the iron that has oxidized onto the bottom of the pool be vacuumed and trapped in the filter? If I could skip discharging a ton of water out during the vacuuming process (as my wife's cousin suggested), that would reduce the amount of water I need to replace in the near-term. And I talked...

New Pool Owner - Above Ground

Now my cousin, who has a pool and is the contractor putting in the deck surrounding the pool, suggests we try and vacuum out the iron/rust on the bottom and discharge/siphon it out of the pool...then refill that loss of water with filtered water (via a filter on our hose). Sound plausible and...

New Pool Owner - Above Ground

I think I've given up on the iron and this batch of water. As I drain it in preparation for having water trucked in, what's the best way to both clean the liner and leave enough water that I don't screw up the liner position (assume I don't want to take all water out and have the liner shift)?

New Pool Owner - Above Ground

So, you're saying instead of raiding her clothes to soak up iron, I should go for her pillow? Not sure she'll like that either. Lol How do you use a 5 gallon bucket with poly? Rig up something like I've seen people do in YouTube videos? Is this iron thing a winnable battle, or should I...

New Pool Owner - Above Ground

And after only 30 minutes, the first section of cut-up t-shirt is completely rust colored. Looks like I better raid the wife's closet next! :o

New Pool Owner - Above Ground

Had just put a section of a cut-up, white t-shirt in the skimmer to see what it could 'catch' of the iron (before seeing your latest reply). But after seeing your message, I checked the water color, and it is kind of a green tea color. Not trying to get impatient though...seeing as I turned on...

New Pool Owner - Above Ground

Thank you for the welcome! Is there a proven way to get the iron out without replacing water? I've seen quite a number of homemade videos featuring people making their own filtering system to get it out, but I'm not sure I'm ready for that. I guess I should have asked to fill my pool off my...

New Pool Owner - Above Ground

Our new pool was installed on Monday, and it finished filling last night via well water (with a little help from mother nature). This is our first ever pool. We got it for my boys as a special reward for a few years of health issues one of my sons faced. Initially the water was a murky brown...
