New borate drop test at piscines-apollo vs. test strip

What makes the Hach strips too vague? I’ve read this entire thread and more trying to determine the best (easiest) test method. If the issue with the strips is determining the colors I thought I could get a standard solution to pinpoint the exact color the strip should be. If that makes sense :)

    Help with cloudy water

I stopped the the spa to pool waterfall as soon as I read pooldv's response. I plan to do the whole battery of tests Friday evening to see where I'm at. I checked the pH earlier - 7.5.

    Help with cloudy water

Oh, I thought I read that it would lower chlorine levels. Well it's down to 13 now so it should be fine by Saturday.

    Help with cloudy water

I passed the OCLT with no loss at all, the water is clear, and CC is zero! WooHoo! now I am aerating to bring chlorine level down to a safe level to swim. What is that level? It was 20.5 at 6 this morning but I haven't checked it since. I will check it shortly since I'm dying to jump in! It's 93...

    Help with cloudy water

Ok good to know. I thought the TF-100 test kit directions said to run samples indoors under good light.

    Help with cloudy water

I forgot to say that I plan to do an OCLT tonight. Fingers crossed that it passes! Also, my dog Toby pointed out that I had a baby rattlesnake swimming around a few hours ago. As I watched it managed to get out of the pool. Toby ran over to check it out since he loves anything that moves fast...

    Help with cloudy water

Not much to update since life has been getting in the way rather drastically today! I did not test for FC this morning so I don't know if there was a loss or not overnight. Nor did I call the pool builder for advice on pool volume. Hopefully tomorrow will be an easier day for me and I can get...

    Help with cloudy water

I have been doing CYA tests in my kitchen under the fluorescent lights. Is it better to do it outside? I really don't have much faith in that test as it's difficult to tell if I can still see the black dot or not. Sometimes it seems that the dot gets imprinted on my retinas and I'm not sure if...

    Help with cloudy water

I do know who built the pool but they have such a bad reputation that I am hesitating contacting them. I understand your idea of using bleach to determine volume and I'm playing with that now. the 344oz of bleach came from the pool math calculator but I based that on 15,000 gallons which I now...

    Help with cloudy water

I have a pic of the pool sectioned down the middle showing depths and slope etc. and I can scan it it but I'm not sure how to post it. It's 16x32; 3ft. at the shallow end and 6ft at the deepest part which is really just a well sort of. The sides are squiggly but if you imagine that it's a string...

They are 128oz. Walmart great value 8.25%. Not sure what you mean by the 5 digit code. Do you think the test will still be accurate even though I went so far over the shock ppm?

    Help with cloudy water

Well it took me an extra day to do the OCLT but started it this evening. FC was at 4.5 and CYA was at 50. The pool calculator told me to add 344 oz of 8.25% bleach which I did. Waited an hour or so with pump running and re tested. Now FC is at 30ppm instead of the 20 I was shooting for. I'm not...

    Help with cloudy water

Ok, let me make sure I understand this. This evening I test chlorine and CYA, then add bleach to come up to shock value as per the chart and based on CYA. Run pump 30 minutes and test chlorine again. That's my starting value. Then run pump overnight and test again first thing the next morning...

    Help with cloudy water

In the days previous the pH was going up so I added acid. Then Cl started going down so I added bleach. 1 or 2 adults in the pool for an hour or so. Since I added the shock last night the water has cleared up considerably. I can see the drains in the deep end. But it seems I'm skating on the...

    Help with cloudy water

Oh boy. I really need to work on my patience...after reading about algae blooms multiplying so fast I decided to throw a pouch of HTH shock in the pool. I'll run all the tests again tomorrow and re post my results then. I feel stupid that I didn't wait for your reply. Lesson learned. I need to...

    Help with cloudy water

Thanks for your reply, I truly need all the help I can get! since it's 1:30 in the am here I guess I should wait for tomorrow to do the OCLT. I have 2 gallons of bleach on hand and as tempting as it seems I think I should wait until I can get to the store and pick up more bleach rather than toss...

    Help with cloudy water

You're exactly right on the FC. Yesterday it was at 0.5 and the water looked good, well Ok. Punched in my numbers on the PoolMath calculator and it told me to add bleach which I did. Well you saw my latest results. I definitely have a lot to learn but have been reading up on the SLAM process...

    Help with cloudy water

New pool owner confused about dealing with cloudy water. Thanks in advance for any and all advice! I've been reading the forum and following the tips but not sure what my problem is here. The pool math calculator (which I love BTW) tells me all is well. Any ideas? FC 4 CC 0 CH 350 TA 100 CYA 50...
