    Esther Williams wall decay?

From talking to local places still selling this type of pool, it sounds like my situation is fairly unusual, so no real idea why the aluminum decayed so much. Hopefully, you don't have the same problem. If you do need parts, try googling "teddy Bear Pools" - they are in MA and sell parts for...

    Esther Williams wall decay?

Well, the amount of money it would cost to buy all the needed new slats, plus replace the straps across the middle, plus the fact that whatever is in the dirt means it will all corrode again within several years means we're done with the pool and will probably try to find a new home for the...

    Esther Williams wall decay?

I think the aluminum slats on this pool are less likely to fail that way, but I still don't want to take the chance. For one, I would be afraid it would break where the pics are and go directly towards a basement window. Edit: well, unless someone knows more about this type of pool and can say...

    Esther Williams wall decay?

The company that bought the rest of the Esther Williams business only bought the production side, and there is no warranty on older products. The panels cannot be inverted. Even if they could be, then the liner bead rail would be sitting on top of non-existent slat tops. I'm looking into...

    Esther Williams wall decay?

I talked to the place where we bought it & they commented that they don't usually see damage like this until after 20-25 years, not 14.

    Esther Williams wall decay?

One of the inside pics (middle one?) shows the pool looking a little sad-faced.

    Esther Williams wall decay?

Since I don't want to write that much, I took some photos. Is there something about our dirt? I didn't think the liner was leaking, but maybe there were lots of micro holes seeping chlorinated water onto the aluminum? The pic with the strap shows it completely corroded. All the straps are like...

I wasn't comfortable with any of those holes either - will check on warranty, but I doubt there will be any with the company changes, etc. I'll continue inspecting the slats and the metal rail that sits under them. If that is all corroded too, I doubt it would be worth even changing slats.

    Esther Williams wall decay?

I joined here when we had our 15x30 Esther Williams above ground pool put in back in 2009 and learned how to manage the pool from reading a lot of articles around here. Haven't really had any issues until now. After removing the liner to have it replaced, the 4 central support straps were found...

Identifying sediment; fighting algae; & OCLT

Thanks; I had started to wonder since the percent overnight loss at MA level could have translated to < 1.0 at a much lower Cl level. The good news for me, anyway, was that the OCLT test last night resulted in just about the exact same test results at 10 PM and 5:30 AM -- the results of FC =...

Identifying sediment; fighting algae; & OCLT

OCLT question Here's a question regarding the OCLT: the general rule is to consider everything to be fine if the loss is < 1.0. But, is that loss proportional to the amount of chlorine in the water? For example: in the middle of a sunny day, over the course of an hour, I believe I've read that...

    max FC with vinyl pools

Thanks for asking & for the answer. I was actually searching the forum for this earlier today & then saw this question posted, so I just waited. :)

7 days of shocking, still getting whipped

Then I won't feel too bad yet -- I've only passed the 3rd night at MA shock level with 2+ ppm FC loss each night + a couple days before that at normal shock level w/o any FC loss at night. In preparation for Irene, I've drained the pool of water & filled it with chlorine. That ought to take...

Identifying sediment; fighting algae; & OCLT

Re: Somewhere to send sediment sample? There was actually more FC loss last night than the first night. But, that should mean some progress since at normal shock levels FC didn't drop at all overnight. Between a storm coming through now & Irene hitting us this weekend (though weakened compared...

Identifying sediment; fighting algae; & OCLT

Re: Somewhere to send sediment sample? Yes, that's what I was asking, thanks. I guess I was just leery of keeping the higher Cl level for a longer time, but it does seem to be more effective since anything lower never had a > 1 OCLT.

Identifying sediment; fighting algae; & OCLT

Re: Somewhere to send sediment sample? I've been trying to search the forum for this: the mustard algae instructions say to keep FC at mustard shock levels for 24 hours after passing the OCLT at regular shock level. But, mustard shock level has produced the first OCLT where the FC drop was > 1...

Identifying sediment; fighting algae; & OCLT

Re: Somewhere to send sediment sample? Thanks for that reminder -- I had thought of (hopefully) everything else, but forgot about inside the skimmer. Things I can clean will be cleaned; things like foam noodles are going away.

Identifying sediment; fighting algae; & OCLT

Re: Somewhere to send sediment sample? Wouldn't you know it: right after I give up trying to determine what the stuff is myself & ask here whether someplace offers a service to identify the stuff, the pool finally started turning slightly cloudy a couple days later. I think whatever is there...

Identifying sediment; fighting algae; & OCLT

Re: Somewhere to send sediment sample? Thanks for the comments. I haven't tried that yet; will add it to my list. Now that you mention it, Rutgers is essentially right around the corner. I'll have to look into that. Yes, I've put filters over the return. Things are definitely getting caught...

Identifying sediment; fighting algae; & OCLT

Is there a place to send a sample of sediment to finally determine what this stuff is? I've looked at it under a microscope & I see round objects... but then when I check pollen & algae photo samples, what I see seems like it could be either. The sample I put in a container still has the...

Bad CYA rumors real or some other reason for CYA not rising?

Sure, I could do that. Just be aware that the water might evaporate during shipping and you might only end up with dehydrated water. Just add more water when you get the container & you'll be fine. ;)

Bad CYA rumors real or some other reason for CYA not rising?

Since I said I would let the 5 gallon bucket sit a few more weeks, I thought I would finally report the results... unfortunately, I failed the test. The CYA test of the water on the bucket resulted in perfectly clear water in the CYA tube. I had been putting small amounts of bleach in the...

How much power does a shop vac need for closing?

Hmmm ... well, I thought the answer would be more clear-cut than this. :) What I like about the shop vacs I'm looking at is that they have detachable blowers, so they would be similar to leaf blowers while also being useful as a vac, when needed. I have no other current use for an air...

How much power does a shop vac need for closing?

I've edited my question in the first post to indicate that while I don't have a main drain, both the skimmer/return lines are about 12" underground for about 10 feet. Unless the compressor blows a lot of air, wouldn't it leave a fair amount of water in the underground lines? I've got a...

How much power does a shop vac need for closing?

I thought I had seen some recommendations about shop vacs last fall, regarding how powerful the shop vac needed to be to blow out the lines when closing, but my searches aren't finding many details. In preparation for closing my AG pool (much later) this fall, I thought about watching for a...
