Would having air in my lines cause the sand from my filter to blow out the jet?

When I turned on my pool this season a large amount of sand came blowing in from my jet. I had just cleaned, backwashed for 3 min and then rinsed for 1 min. Could this be because my water level was low(just above my jet)? Or do I need to worry? I have a 24' AG with 15500gal.
