    low CYA, high chlorine...unsafe?

I have finished a complete drain and refill recently due to metal staining and high CYA. After some discussion my husband wanted to use the trichlor pucks to gradually raise the CYA instead of adding it separately. (We have leftover trichlor pucks from before the drain/refill) Using the pool...

    Bleach versus Cal-Hypo (cost)

Ok here I am again. I searched online and couldn't find anything definitive. I've been committed to doing BBB method but started wondering if all the bleach will add up to be a ton of $ in the end. Pool store sells Cal-Hypo at $83 for 25 pounds. She said that would last the rest of the season...

    Pool refill, TF-100 results

We drained and cleaned our pool due to metal staining and high CYA. The new water has these results: Chlorine (FAS/DPD): 0.5 CH= 50ppm TA= 30ppm pH= 7.0 CYA= 0 I can find out how much and what to add from the pool calculator but which ones do I correct first? I'm planning on using the BBB...

Partial drain and metal staining...add acid after refill?

Our cya is over 150, and after fighting with the chlorine for over a month we realized it would be cheaper just to do a partial drain of the pool. There are brown stains all over the pool, which is fiberglass. After doing some research I tried vitamin C tablets on it and of course we were...

    Is the TF 100 essential

I'm wondering what's in it that is worth $68. Amazon sells a CYA test for less than $10, and we can get a basic kit for cheap from wherever. I get that the TF 100 has alot more reagent/tests in it- but don't they expire? I think this info is on the site somewhere but I couldn't find it. TIA

    Hubby not buying it

Hi all, I was here last year doing research and trying to fix the issues going on with our in-ground ~20K pool. We just replaced our pump which died while trying to get the pool open for the season. We now have a Hayward Super Pump variable speed pump. Last year I had the water tested by a...

    Longevity of reagents?

Ok, we are on a tight budget and I'm debating between the TF-50 and TF-100. When I say tight, I mean tight! Yes $20 makes a difference. If we invest in the TF-100 won't it be a waste if the kit ingredients expire? I looked this up on the sticky above and gave up after 7 pages. Could not find...

Cal-Hypo versus bleach with low CA level

I'm debating on whether to buy some cal hypo or not since our calcium is very low. (31) I'm dealing with high CYA so I don't want to use any of the huge container of dichlor we have sitting around. Our pool is inground, fiberglass with a sand filter. The SWG is broken, so sad! So it's just...

Taking over SWG pool maintenance from hubby, advice needed

Hello, We moved into a house with a 20,000 gallon in-ground pool about 4 years ago. The SWG was not working at the time so we've been doing chlorine- but my husband finally fixed the SWG a few days ago. (it just had a leak, and he never spent much time trying to fix it before now) Up to...
