Laying on our pool floats one day talking about how a neighbor's son contracted swimmers ear. Wife - "We're picky about swimming in other people's pools nowadays, aren''t we?" Me - "Well dear, up on the troublefreepool forum they call it being a "pool snob"." Wife - "Then I guess we fit the...

Here is what I learned this season (Edited for cost this yr)

Closed the ABG pool today :( It was a decent season, not as good as our first back in 2007 , but better than some. Here is what I learned from troublefreepool.com this season: 1) Patience - Don't rush to adjust your pH, TA, CH, or CYA ... take you're time. Half dose the pool first, then test...

*****EDIT - Just finished the job, SEE MY LAST POST for pics and parts list.************** I was encouraged by the other thread in this forum regarding hard plumbing my setup. I don't mean to ask to be spoon fed, but I am not a plumber by any means. I know how to prepare, prime, and glue pvc...

CYA increased by 35ppm using two 3" Tri-Chlor pucks

Last week, I noticed my CYA was creeping down to 45ppm. I like to keep her, and she likes to be at 50ppm. So I decided to use two 3" HTH Tri-chlor pucks to try and "bump up" my CYA back to 50ppm. Today I tested for CYA and I was stunned to get a 80ppm reading!! :o I did a retest, and again ...

Learned a lesson today, and a pool safety question.

Well, I learned that when I use the poolcalculator.com that I should check my numbers TWICE and dose ONCE. It's been awhile since I used Borax to raise pH up from 7.2 to 7.5 and I plugged what I thought was "7.2" into the pool calculator. Well, after I got back from putting 99oz. of Borax in my...

    Weight of 3" Tri-chor Tab

Sorry guys, I know I have seen somebody state the weight of 3" Tri-chlor Tabs and I even think what it adds in FC and CYA, but I can't find where the heck I wrote it down. Does anybody know the estimated weight? I was guessin' 6oz. in the pool calculator. With a search for Tri-Chlor or trichlor...

    Another quick thanks to TFP

Came home from vacation last Sunday, and with the calculations, an educated guess of daily FC loss, and a father-in-law who put two jugs of bleach staggered throughout the week (96oz Monday / 182oz Thursday) , my FC was 7.5 at 5pm ... DEAD ON !!! I love it when I have spot on...

    Quick question Re: pre-dissolving Cal-Hypo

How long does it take to dissolve Cal-Hypo in a 5 gallon bucket of water? I've never done it before. According to Pool Calculator I will be dissolving a little over 2lbs. Thanks in advance for your reply (ies)!!

50 cents off coupon for HTH Cal-Hypo on Coupons.com

Other chemicals, ahem, that we won't, or shouldn't use here on the BBB Method have coupons also. My HTH coupons were on page 4 on Coupons.com. Just FYI

Question regarding HTH "3-in-1 Chlorinating Tablets

Do HTH® 3-in-1 Chlorinating Skimmer Tablets have stabilizer in them? I noticed they contain Cal-Hypo but can't see anywhere on the bucket that they contain CYA or "stabilized". I saw the word "softeners", but not "stabilized". Their website sucks for "in depth" chemical information. A MSDS...

BBB Method during week vacation, I have ??

My family will be going on vacation from a Friday (7am) until the following Saturday (4pm) , essentially almost 9 days. My neighbor, who usually looks after my house / pool, is going with us. I may have an option for someone to add bleach at some point during week, maybe. Here are my questions /...

    Sun Sorb

Bought a Sun Sorb from an online pool supply merchant. Really does seem to help with getting the sunscreen film off the top of the water. It also helps keep the scum line away inside the skimmer. Bought it because of reviews on merchants website. Just FYI ...

Bleach on sale at Kinney's Drugs (NY, VT, maybe NH)

For those of you near a Kinney's drug, a GALLON (not those stupid 96oz. bottles) of bleach is on sale for $0.99 (no coupon needed). I can't attest for the strength, expiry, or effectiveness, as I mostly use Aldi's Tundra brand (stupid 96oz. bottles). I have plenty in stock so I won't be cashing...

A big THANK YOU to my friends here at "Trouble Free"

Just wanted to say thanks and share a story. First off, my pool water looks, feels, and smells (low odor) AMAZING!! My pool water never sparkled so well. My wife even commented last night on how "shiny" the water looked. I just chuckled and said, "Thanks to the pool boy." (Me). But in the back...

When to change out filter sand?

First, thanks for all the help late last summer with my pool problems. With a TF-100 testing kit, some reading (ok, a TON of reading), using the BBB Method, and help from several members here, I was able to overcome an algae problem and learn the "method of madness" to pool chemistry. Now with...

After reading Pool School and The BBB Method AND having a recent problem with Pink Algae, I have decided to "Dive In" to the BBB Method of pool chemistry. I do have a few questions, but first ... my setup and chemistry. Setup: 24' Round (14,600 gal) Hayward Pro 18" Sand Filter w/ 1HP Powerflo...
