Based on what I've read here, you need to get the water chemistry "right" before turning on a SWG anyway. And you still shock the traditional way with a SWG. So it will do no harm to go ahead and adjust TA and pH and add chlorine to get your chems in line. That way the kids can swim safely...

Do you have a DE filter? If so, have you verified there are no holes in the grids? Sounds to me like DE. The Overnight FC test mentioned above will tell you if it's algae or not. If test shows no overnight FC loss, bet you a douoghnut it's DE.
