    Solar cover to Hawaii?

Thanks, James. I have seen several of these--they are mostly pool services. None of them have a catalog. But you're right. If I contact them, I may be able to get them to order something for me. I have also looked at Sears, which will deliver here, but they carry only the 8mil blue...

    Solar cover to Hawaii?

I'm having a devil of a time getting someone to ship a solar cover to Hawaii. Most of them won't tell you until the checkout phase, when you go to select your state--they don't even have an entry for Hawaii. I have written to Doheny's to ask for a real-price shipping quote. They don't even...

Any inventive ideas for a pool light?

Yeah, thanks, Scott. Common sense and all that. The jar was bouyant enough that drifted to the bottom; it did not hit the floor (vinyl/comfy bottom) with any velocity. I'd still do the experiment, but you're right, prob'ly not such a good idea in general.

Any inventive ideas for a pool light?

Did anyone actually try this? I did. Mason jam jar with a "rubberized" lid; some marbles and an LED flashlight. Meh. The light is uni-dimensional--only illuminates the bottom. And in general needs to be much much brighter. I had to play with the marbles a little. My first jar went...

A week after algae bloom, pool still cloudy.

OCLT stands for Overnight Chlorine Loss Test. It is a way to see how much chlorine is being consumed by organisms like algae or bacteria. The less chlorine you lose, the fewer live organisms you have. At the top of this page on the right there is a big button that says pool school. Click it...

    Pool Hoses leaking! HELP ME!

Oh, and, be sure to pick up plumber's grease to help seal any threaded connections, like into the pump, and at the filter against leaks. Some people like teflon tape, but I found it to be a pain.

    Pool Hoses leaking! HELP ME!

I don't remember what the cure time is, but it isn't long--check out the instructions on the "purple primer" and the "blue glue" PVC adhesive. Flex PVC is nice, I hear, (I'm going to try it out when I install my new pump) but I find it to be expensive. Depending on where you are, it may not...

    Pool Hoses leaking! HELP ME!

tonieb, I had the same problem. Nothing I did, including silicone, helped. I think the pump was pushing too much water for the hoses with clamps. So I hard plumbed it (It's easier than you think) and haven't had a leak since.

    Right-size pump & filter

Thanks, everybody! I've decided on a .75 hp single speed dynamo. Less than $200 on Amazon. Should cut my power usage in half and let my filter do its job.

    Right-size pump & filter

Mark, by "hard wired" I mean a pump that you can't just plug into an electrical outlet, but that requires an electrician to wire it directly into the household electrical supply. All the pumps you mention are (as I understand it) for in-ground pools.

    Right-size pump & filter

Hi, George, With a 1.5 hp single speed and my tiny pool, I currently run my pump about 4 hrs daily, manual start/stop depending on conditions and bather load. I'm told that a more efficient pump would be cheaper to run, even with longer turnover times. But combining cost of 1) more expensive...

    Right-size pump & filter

aaagh Well, to complicate things even further, I'm told that anything 2 speed has to be hardwired. That ain't going to happen, because of the location of our pool and the cost of getting an electrician out here. Should I just go to a .75 hp single speed and be done with it?

    Right-size pump & filter

I double-checked my electric rates, and found that the residential rates are somewhat lower than the commercial rates I quoted, at around .35 per kwh. Still higher than many places in the USA. Nonetheless, I'm looking into replacing my pump sooner than I would have otherwise, for the energy...

    Right-size pump & filter

Hey, Bama, I'm back. Still browsing around for 3/4 hp pumps and there are so few 2-speeds, I have to wonder why? They're wicked expensive, too. Would a single speed 3/4 hp be adequate, or still suck too much power? We spend .43 per kWh, so I'd like to find the most power miserly pump I can...

    Darn Swimmers!

I have the same issue. I attribute it to the dust here, which is extremely fine, like silt. Even with skimmer socks, which catch a lot of it, I'm never entirely clear, even after vacuuming.

Bama, regarding a 3/4 hp pump, are they available in 2-speed? I haven't seen any--can you recommend a name? ah, never mind--I found one.
