What is this and why is it so filthy?

I'm taking over my pool maintenance this season for the 1st time after firing my dishonest, incompetent pool guy and am preparing for opening. Opened up the filter tank to find the most disgusting black cartridge filters (as the pool guy apparently never cleaned them, despite telling me he did...

    Liquid stabilizer for spa CYA?

    Yes, understood. Thanks

    Liquid stabilizer for spa CYA?

I've been using di-chlor for CYA in my spa but is there any reason I shouldn't use liquid stabilizer in scenarios where I want to take CYA from 0 to target much more quickly than via multiple di-chlor doses? Thanks

OK to use this Clorox bleach?

    OK, great--thanks!

OK to use this Clorox bleach?

I've been using Pool Essentials 10% liquid chlorine from Lowes for the post-soak treatment of my spa but just found out that they are no longer selling it. Can't find anything comparable anywhere locally. There are some online sources that require bulk purchases at outrageous prices. Soooo...

How to clean Taylor salt test tube #9198

This tube collects fine black debris in the bottom around the edges of the circle--it won't rinse out and I haven't come up with an easy way to remove it. Any ideas? Thanks

Polaris Quattro P40 vs. Polaris Freedom

The Freedom is cordless, so gotta remove it to recharge

Polaris Quattro P40 vs. Polaris Freedom

Good info--thanks. I'm heavily leaning toward to P40, given the amount of debris we get, as I think it needs cleaning almost every day in-season and the idea of putting the robot in, coming back in few hours to remove it, drying it off sufficiently to charge and then charging it almost every...

Polaris Quattro P40 vs. Polaris Freedom

Thanks, Rocket. Some questions: How many hours/day do you run it? Do you remove it when you swim and, if so, is it easy to do so? What do you have to do to manually clean it out and how often do you have to do that? If it failed today, would you consider the Freedom as an alternative? Thanks!

Polaris Quattro P40 vs. Polaris Freedom

Our very old pressure-side Polaris 380 has finally kicked the bucket and I'm looking to replace it. This will be my 1st cleaner purchase, as we inherited the old one (and the pool) when we bought the house. I'm considering the P40 and the Freedom (yes, I know one is pressure-side and one is a...

Newbie needs help with spa water chemistry problems

I haven't seen a good argument against the use of Aqua Clarity and I've seen some good ones supporting it. But I'm always open to changing my mind.

Newbie needs help with spa water chemistry problems

Thanks, M'88! I've definitely been known to overthink things, but, after seeing FC additions of only 17%-73% of spec, it seemed reasonable to wonder if my unit is faulty. So, I wanted to check my math and/or make sure I'm not missing something, while the unit is under warranty. It would...

Newbie needs help with spa water chemistry problems

I've converted my spa to SWG via the Saltron Mini and am getting some weird FC data, so am wondering if anyone has any thoughts on what might be going on. My water has been perfectly balanced now for over a week--TA 50, pH 7.4-7.6, CYA 30, BOR 50, CH 120, Salt 2000. Before introducing the S...

OK, good. Yeah, that's essentially what I'm doing. Not in a big hurry to get to 30 given it's covered.

Newbie needs help with spa water chemistry problems

Did another 24-hr depletion test and FC dropped from 9.5 to 7.5 with no spa use. This 2.0 ppm depletion is the lowest I've seen yet, so perhaps Methuselah's thought that the filters could be the problem was on target (as I replaced them 24 hrs ago). pH remains stable at 7.4. Still not enough...

OK, thanks. Why is CH drop such a big issue? I thought CH levels basically remain unchanged save for replacing water loss.

OK, that makes me feel better about what I measured today, unless I tested too soon to get the full drop. How long do you wait until you test after leaving the tub?

OK, will try something similar with the filters---thanks. I understood from the pinned guide that anything less than 50 can lead to instability, but you think 40 is fine? Or is 40 not fine but you would use something other than baking soda to bring up TA (I thought baking soda was the only...

Newbie needs help with spa water chemistry problems

An update and some new questions: I put in new filters, then did a 30 minute solo soak test--measured 6.0 FC before (odd that it measured only 5.5 earlier today--end points were obvious in both cases...maybe my drop sizes were slightly different?) and 5.0 FC after. 0.5 CC before and after...

Newbie needs help with spa water chemistry problems

Thanks! Yes, I didn't add the boric acid till I had TA at 50 and pH at 7.4, so all good there. On the demand, I checked again this morning (23 hrs since last check) and FC was at 5.5, vs. 10.5 before. So, to recap, over 3 days with no spa usage, 24 hr FC depletion has been 7.5 ppm, 3.5 ppm...

Newbie needs help with spa water chemistry problems

This is super helpful--thanks. I was relying on the Taylor Water Chemistry guide that came with my K-2006 and that says di-chlor is "nearly neutral pH" but Pool Math EoA makes it clear that the pH change I saw was to be expected. Good stuff.
