    Sand filter question

I believe the laterals are the same. I get my parts from In The Swim and they don't make a mention of a newer version, however there are a couple different sizes, ones for the 100 and other larger ones for the 140 and up. Make sure it's your lateral before buying one. I thought I had a broken...

    Sand filter question

Wow, someone else has the same ancient filter! Mine was also installed in '86. I've got one TR-100 and two TR-140s at work. The 100 always "percolates" like you said, and requires air bleeding frequently. I think in my case it's because there's a flexible coupling before the pump that might...

    Backwashing...

Re: Bashwashing... On our (ancient) filters you're also supposed to let them sit for 30 seconds before starting the pump after backwashing, to settle the sand bed back down. A multi-port valve has a rinse setting for this.

How often should you have to replace the whole filter

All of the Triton sand filters we have at our hotel and the Harmsco cartridge filter are circa 1986 and for the most part still work very well. One sprang a tiny leak a few years ago but the pool putty held up just fine ever since with no leaks. With that said though, I think we'll looking into...

Impeller - is this my problem?

Don't mention it! :goodjob: Another small item to note, it may be reverse threaded depending on the pump, so if it seems to be unscrewing hard try the other direction. If you still have the manual it will probably have that info.

Impeller - is this my problem?

Make sure of the pump model and corresponding impeller you need, and order a new one. The part number might be right on the impeller itself. They go on really easily. Just hold the opposite end of the motor shaft in place with a wrench and unscrew what's left with channel locks pliers, then...

Impeller - is this my problem?

Yup, the third picture is what's left of your impeller. You'll have to unscrew what's left on the motor shaft and replace it.

    Choosing the right liquid feeder(s)

Thank you very much for your helpful replies everyone, I truly appreciate your time. So in reality, salt isn't much of a concern at all in pools?

    Choosing the right liquid feeder(s)

If I switch to liquid chlorine (after using enough Trichlor to bring my CYA up to ~30ppm) in this pool, which is only open from June to October, will I have any issues with salt buildup, based on the average chlorine usage mentioned in the first post of this thread? Just want to have all my...

Couple questions about fecal accident response

Thanks a lot James, I think I've got a slightly better handle on it. I'll give you a shout if I have any more questions on this. I can't say I've read much of anything about DHM before you brought it up.

Couple questions about fecal accident response

Thanks a lot James, I really appreciate you calculating all that! You say with ~90 ppm bromide I have enough of a bromide bank to skip the initial 8 lbs. What is the target size of the bromide bank? I know there's no upper limit, but how about a lower limit? I've seen some products intended...

    Great Value Bleach vs Clorox

I haven't done any pricing locally but I found these 15 gallon carboys that I might start buying, unless I can find a similar amount cheaper. I think 55 is too much to have around for my needs.

Couple questions about fecal accident response

What kind of a dosing schedule would I be looking at with the sodium bromide? My usual dosage for bromine is 2 bags (roughly 60 1" tabs each at 0.5 oz./tab = 60 oz. = 3.75 lbs) every 10-14 days, depending on bather loads, and I like to keep it at around 6ppm. As far as water replacement, I...

Couple questions about fecal accident response

So to implement this in a pool that's already been using bromine could one just add sodium bromide periodically while constantly feeding liquid chlorine with a peri pump at lower rates? While it's only happened once or twice, I have had complaints of minor skin irritation (only in the bromine...

Couple questions about fecal accident response

OK, here's another newbie-ish question. How do you know when that bromide bank is depleted, and your not just reading the chlorine oxidizer on the test?

Couple questions about fecal accident response

Ugh! My General Manager is going to hate my finding this website, but I like knowing this stuff. Thanks guys. According to the CPO handbook: "There are two methods of providing hypobromous acid (HOBr) to pools and spas other than elemental bromine. The first is sodium bromide activated by the...

Couple questions about fecal accident response

Son of a ...... Another insidious chemical I never knew about. I checked our state codes and it makes no mention of dimethylhydantoin at all, or of any level it should be maintained at, so I think we're okay in the compliance aspect. You said "It probably has an inhibitory effect on the...

    Choosing the right liquid feeder(s)

Thanks a lot for the info, Racket. I know their installation of the laundry chemical dispensers sure left a lot to be desired. Do they not allow the end-user to install it at all? Will they even sell their chemicals without you using their equipment? Is their price on chlorine any better or...

    Choosing the right liquid feeder(s)

Thanks again everyone. I'm going to meet with the Ecolab rep at the hotel, they supply the bleach to the laundry department and provide the pumps for all the chemicals. I'll see if they have any solutions, I know they have a pool and spa division. If not I think I'll see if I can order a Stenner...

    Choosing the right liquid feeder(s)

Do you think the 8 gal Liquidator (thanks for the link to it) would work well with the 1,200 gal hot tub? I think I'd have a hard time convincing my higher-ups to buy 2 pump setups. They don't want to put money into the pools, but they're the first to complain when there's an issue. If I were...

    Choosing the right liquid feeder(s)

Thanks again for the replies. One thing I forgot to mention about the pools is that the pumps run on them 24/7, don't know if that makes a difference with any of the options. Jason, is a compatible cap with feed tube for the 55gal drums an option from Stenner or is that something that's...

    Choosing the right liquid feeder(s)

I recently took over operation of the pools at our hotel, and only recently discovered that Trichlor adds large amounts of CYA. The operator before me never tested for it and I wasn't even aware we had to until now. So I want to switch to liquid chlorine somehow, but I don't really want to add...

    MPS effects?

MPS doesn't contribute to a rise in CYA does it?

    MPS effects?

Thanks for the reply Jason. Based on your response about MPS being better at lowering combined chlorine levels than cal-hypo, should I just stick with MPS for the outdoor (chlorine) pool's weekly shock maintenance and use cal-hypo just for "incidents"? Or is there a better reason to stick with...

    MPS effects?

We've been using MPS for a couple years as a weekly maintenance shock in the pools at our hotel, mainly due to the "swim in 15 minutes" claim. We have a 35,000 gallon chlorine pool outside and a 25,000 gallon bromine pool inside. Still, I was curious about the effects and possible interactions...

Couple questions about fecal accident response

Thanks for all the help everyone. I'm starting to get a better understanding of it now. Another question I have is can you use chlorine shocks in a bromine pool? The bromine in the pool is normally kept at a little over 6ppm, which is the chlorine equivalent of 3ppm which is the suggested level...

Couple questions about fecal accident response

I'm located in New Hampshire. I've gone over the codes a few times and while there is info regarding what level the bromine should be kept at during normal operation, there is no mention of raising bromine levels in response to fecal accident, only the chlorine levels. This is why I was...

Couple questions about fecal accident response

Thanks for the reply! This is indeed a public pool. Bromine is an acceptable sanitizer according to the code, it must be maintained between 2-10 mg/L. Just wasn't sure what to do in this event, normally I'd just add a bunch of the non-chlorine shock, now I'm not so sure if that's the best...

Couple questions about fecal accident response

I was going over the state codes for Fecal Accident Response where I live and I had a few questions. Our indoor pool uses bromine and the state asks for the free chlorine to be raised to 20ppm and maintain for 13 hours in the event, it makes no mention of bromine levels. Is there a...
