    Mustard Algae?

Hi all, me again.. A couple more questions.. My mom got a quote from a company. For $9,500-$10,000 they said they would ‘fix the problem spots, then re-fiberglass the pool.’ Another company quoted $19K and said they advise us against going through the process because they will remove the...

I ask because we were quoted just about $20,000 to re-finish the pool in either plaster or fiberglass. Thus with price nearly the same, it sounds as if plaster is better for gunite…

Thank you. Out of curiosity (question for anyone).. is fiberglass or plaster better for a gunite pool, if money was not an object.. for me “better” is more reliable/attractive

    Mustard Algae?

Got it. To all, we are unsure of if/when the house will be sold.. With that being said, pool companies that have come by the house have suggested fiberglass yet state that fiberglass causes issues, which seems contradictory. Thus, it sounds as if plaster would be the best choice. And I’m sure...

    Mustard Algae?

Hi everyone, it’s been awhile but I didn’t want to create a new thread unless I should. We are now considering re-doing the pool before a potential sale in the next few years. Per the attached photo (from 1986), it seems the spot in the shallow end has been there (but become more noticeable)...

FYI, I tried the muriatic acid to no avail. At this point it seems we either resurface entire pool or leave it as is. After taking a look underwater with new goggles, it doesn’t appear to be a stain but actually the surfacing material (paint, plaster, whatever) failing.

    Mustard Algae?

Understood. Thank you so much for your help James. It is much appreciated. And thank you everyone else for your help as well! I noticed we did have some muriatic acid at the house. Would putting it on the stain for the heck of it cause more problems or is it worth a try if I have time?

With this known, the pool does need to be resurfaced. What is an affordable yet durable way to resurface the pool?

    Mustard Algae?

Hi James and everyone, I looked through an appraisal from when the home was purchased in 1986. The documents state that it is an “inground gunite pool”. With that said, is it possible the pool has been surfaced with fiberglass? And then some sort of paint or plaster.

    Mustard Algae?

Ok so you all are referring to the structure? As in concrete vs gunite? Then fiberglass and paint/plaster over? I can look through old documents to try and find the answer. Our home was built in the 60s and the pool was originally done then with the home. Not sure if that helps but maybe the age...

    Mustard Algae?

Correct, we don’t think it is rebar after help from the forum and professionals stopping by. What is the most cost effective way to refinish a fiberglass pool? I just found out about vinyl via googling, can you refinish a fiberglass pool with vinyl? I also saw ecofinish but it appears pretty...

    Mustard Algae?

It’s absolutely fiberglass with some sort of paint/plaster over the entire surface. And yes the tiles were installed around the perimeter about seven years ago when all the other work was done. We’ve been told by numerous pool companies that have stopped by that it is not rebar, however, one guy...

    Mustard Algae?

Sorry for my ignorance. I was under the impression the pool is fiberglass and my dad had literally painted (with the pool paint), the surface of the pool approximately 7 years ago. Do you still believe it’d be worthwhile to try your approach mentioned?

    Mustard Algae?

Does anyone know if maybe the paint is wearing, and the paint wear mixed with the fiberglass is causing this abnormal stain. My girlfriend has been diving down with her new goggles and she says it looks like fiberglass material within the stain which leads me to believe it’s simply the paint...

    Mustard Algae?

Understood. I don’t have much knowledge but our new pool guy (1 month of service in) is maintaining the levels according to him.

The paint is definitely aging. I think the idea was a cheap five year-ish fix, and it’s now been about seven-years. The stain feels just as the rest of the pool does just slightly (hardly noticeable) less smooth. The original pool is not this brown-ish color..

    Mustard Algae?

It feels just as the rest of the pool does just maybe a little less ‘smooth.’ There is definitely not a slimy/algae texture to it!

    Mustard Algae?

Confirmed, thank you James. We had our third visit with a professional and he said he didn’t know what it was but not too worry about considering my dads passing and my mom likely selling the home in the next year or two. He also said it’s due for a total renovation considering the age and it...

    Mustard Algae?

I should mention. My girlfriend and I scrubbed the stain with a coarse pool brush last night and after we took it out of the water the brush reeked of algae like a dirty turtle tank…

    Mustard Algae?

So the phosphates level doesn’t mean that it is more likely an algae stain? The iron and copper is 0 so I assumed it’s not metal related. I assume FC is free chlorine and CC is concentrated chlorine? That means if I put sulfamic acid in the pool I’d need to monitor the chlorine levels? This...

    Mustard Algae?

Hi all, we’ve hired a pool service to come weekly but the guy tells us to ignore it as it’s cosmetic but it’s ugly so that isn’t ideal. I took some water to leslies to test and the results are attached. It appears that the stain is some type of algae as the phosphates level is at 779ppb. I’ve...

I should also mention, in the corner of the pool by the steps in the photo, about an inch of rebar is starting to protrude. Do you think the stain could be the top of rebar or somehow related?

    Mustard Algae?

Hi James thanks for the help, I’m relaying all these questions to my mom but since my dad handled the pool maintenance she really doesn’t have answers to your questions. I apologize for that. She also stated, that “although frowned upon, the pools surface is painted because it was the cheapest...

    Mustard Algae?

We’ve tried brushing with a normal pool brush to no avail. We’ve also tried vitamin C and that didn’t work. Apparently the stain has been there longer than six months. I can try to pull the chemistry readings and filter along with a picture in a bit. Thank you thus far.
