I really like the 121oz bottles of 8.25%, I split it in two and use one split per day, it makes the dosing very easy.
If I went to 10% or 12.5% that would mess up my dosing.
I've been shopping at Walmart (they have other stuff I want that I can only get there) so it saves me a trip somewhere...
My Walmart has 8.25% and another brand that is only 2.75% so be sure you find the percentage listed on the bottle. Some bottles don't list the concentration anywhere.
Re: CYA = 122 How Much Bleach To Shock a 28,000 Gallon Pool
Dino,
I went through this whole process. Due to my infloor cleaner plumbing, the main pump will only drain 7" from my pool. So what I did was buy a 1/3 hp submersible pump (from harbor freight) with 1.5" outlet and a drain hose...
I have little confidence in my CYA testing. I have the Taylor k-2006 kit but I also just bought the 50 ppm standard solution from tftestkits. I would read the 50 ppm standard as 100 ppm and my pool water as 50ppm. The 50 ppm standard sample, when combined with the reagent produces a much...
I think there is also "no fume" MA, that is just more diluted than the full strength stuff that fumes when you pour it into the measuring cup.
I wouldn't put the MA bottle in the water, too much of a chance to let water in the MA bottle...this is bad as you should never add water to acid.
I think poolforum.com is having membership acceptance problems now (or at least a month ago). I tried to join, never received the activation email, tried to contact "help" to no avail.
Somehow, I found this place and I'm thankful for it.
I took my pool water to 2 different pool stores yesterday for testing. Store A uses Taylor test kit, Store B uses strips with an electronic strip reader

Re: New Pool Build in Central Texas because of Big Green Egg
Yes, the PCC replaces the polaris robot. I only have pop up nozzles built into the bottom of my pool.

Re: New Pool Build in Central Texas because of Big Green Egg
Gotta love the Socialist utopia of central Texas.
I would suggest a pcc2000 in floor pool cleaner. I love mine. I don't have to wrestle with a python to clean me pool.
Also, avoid the chlorine pucks. They will get your CYA out of...
Re: lessons learned and comments from our pool build
We had to re-route the main electrical supply to our house before the dig. What a mess, it took several days to dig the massive trench, then several weeks to get the utility to hook up the new line.
Our masons were a PITA. They had to do...
I live in Houston where we don't have basements because of the water table. I had to drain a lot of water to lower my cya from 200 to about 65. I was concerned about the water table. I was able to drain 14" without having any issues. I did about 5 drains overall, most about 6-7", but the big...
I think I'll leave it as it is for now. Move on to the shocking phase. Tonight, I'll perform the overnight FC test to see where I am with regard to chlorine consumption.
Yes, the pump is above the pool water level, it's hard to judge because of the distance and you can't see one from the other. Yesterday, I went to Harbor Freight and bought a 1/3 hp submersible pump for $65. It drains about 5"/hour. I was able to drain about 15" out yesterday. Now my CYA is...
Update:
I drained and refilled this weekend. I had to buy a pump, because I couldn't drain more than 7" with the main pump for some reason (topic for a different thread). I added 484 oz of Bleach while refilling as my FC was probably around 1 or 2 (didn't measure)
Test results this morning...
Sorry, I should have included that detail. I did have the skimmer valved off when draining. The water level drops below the skimmer intake after about 3-4 inches have been drained, I was able to go 3-4 inches beyond that before the pump started sucking air. It has to be something else.
I was trying to drain some water out of my pool to lower the CYA. I was using the main pump with the waste port on the filter plumbed for waste.
When the level dropped by 7", the pump started to cavitate. Why would this be the case?
Tested the water this morning
T=68F
FC=11
pH=7.6
TA=130
CH=180 so I added 16lbs of Calcium Chloride. This should raise CH by about 80ppm
did not test for CYA. I have the last 2 pieces of PVC to turn my filter pump into a drain pump.
I plan to do some drains this weekend to lower the CYA.
Thanks for the input. I suspected as much. I don't think I'll get to do more draining until this weekend. I have a plan to build a better drain pipe for the filter, that should speed the drain process.
4/1/14 Checked FC this morning, it was 9.0. A loss of 2.5 since last night, so I added 4 "gallons" of 8.25% bleach. That brought FC up to 24. CC is 0.5.
I have done some small drains. At this point I'm pumping out with the waterfall/bubbler pump through a garden hose. It's yields about 1.5" per hour.
The CYA registers about 160, down from over 200. I've been adding 8.25% bleach after refilling.
Yesterday's test (3/30)
FC 6.5
CC 0.5
PH 7.6...
I think it will be a lengthy process to get the CYA down to a workable level.
Thanks for the advice on the drop counting. This kit is SOOOO much easier to read than the kit they gave me at pool school.
On the FC and CC, I understand about using the 10ml sample. I wanted to do the 25ml since...
Ok, I did a full test on my water just now (good sunlight)
FC = 9.4
CC = 0.8
PH = 7.6
TA = 135 (the sample turned pink at 130 and red at 140 so I averaged)
CH = 280
CYA > 200. I did this sample with 1/2 pool and 1/2 tap water and the dot disappears before the sample rises to the 100 line. I...
I wasn't thinking of a siphon. Actually, I was thinking of just adding water to the deep end and letting the pool overflow through the overflow drain instead of using a pump to drain.
This way I wouldn't have to buy a pump.
