    Pool Heater Mysteries

I am trying to choose a pool heater for next year (live on Long Island NY). My pool is quite shaded, I want it to be 80 degrees from mid april to end September. It ranged only from 55-70 degrees all season . There is obvious choice of propane gas (i wish natural gas was an option for me:() or...

    Where did my CYA go?

As I mentioned above my CYA is just under 30 right now, after about a week of the Trichlor pucks. In my pool they added between 6 and 8 ppm per week, but my pool was cold, never hit 70 degrees all summer. My calculations for the amount of liquid stabilizer were actually indicated from the start...

    Where did my CYA go?

My goodness, so much activity on my post about CYA depletion! I have been floating pucks since discovering my CYA was low (see the posts that started the thread). My CYA is just about 30 a week later and shouldn't climb much higher before closing. I am hoping to have it around 40 ppm on closing...

    Where did my CYA go?

2-3 ppm accounts for maybe 10 ppm of CYA. I think there was 2 bottles of bleach to get FC back on the chart, not sure whether that counts as high demand. I suppose some bacteria could have been there with the low chlorine and polyquat, as long as the AA treatment and polyquat don't impact CYA...

    Where did my CYA go?

The end of the season, I did an ascorbic acid treatment. I had a CYA of about 60 mid-season, I stopped measuring CYA because I stopped adding tricolor pucks and my understanding was that the CYA should remain steady. To do the ascorbic acid treatment, I dropped FC to zero, I added polyquat60 at...

What is this bubbling return jet, why do i have it?

Yes mas985, there is only one pipe that leads from the filter back to the pool, it all goes underneath decking with no valves above decking apparent. It is possible that a valve is present under the decking, but that makes pretty much no sense so I won't go looking for one. The At the best, the...

What is this bubbling return jet, why do i have it?

The photo is actually a short video, but the gurgling audio doesn't really play. Here is another way to try to see it http://s1375.photobucket.com/user/czipper1/media/2014-09-06102954_zpsd51cd7a6.mp4.html?sort=3&o=0 The jets are on the side wall of the fiberglass steps. I doubt very much that...

What is this bubbling return jet, why do i have it?

Pretty simple questions: The return jets at my steps gurgle and spit out bubbles, but the main pool returns do not. What type of return is this called? What is it for? How does it gurgle? One side gurgles better than the other one, should I try to have it repaired or should I not be...

Is an animal batihing in my pool at night?

Well, it seems to be a raccoon, we finally saw the dirty footprints around the edge. I have a raccoon trap already, since they liked to tear up my lawn in my old house. I don't relish the idea of trapping them again but I also don't relish the idea of the big poops that we'll find when we close...

Was my Sand filter installed improperly??

Yes, the sand does seem t pool under the jets after the three backwashes I have done, but it wasn't zeobrite and the pool tech backwashed two days ago and it did not appear this time. So I am still looking to solve the mystery of the sandy pool. (Scooby Doo where are you?)

Was my Sand filter installed improperly??

When the tech was there, we backwashed to trap some of the zeo in the sight glass. It was fairly large grains that clearly had a bluish-green hue to it, the stuff in the pool was yellowish brown and finer than what I saw in the sightglass. Unless the zeo is not uniform in color and consistency...

Is an animal batihing in my pool at night?

lets just say, I think that an animal is sitting on my top step at night. I was seeing sand in the pool, and naively assumed that it was from my new sand filter (see my other post: http://www.troublefreepool.com/threads/83397-Was-my-Sand-filter-installed-improperly). The installer came, informed...

    Dream Home.....Nightmare Pool

The Ascorbic acid treatment worked like a charm! I only dropped handfuls along the side where rusty spots were obvious and holy cow all the rusty stains disappeared, almost instantly, it was so cool. On the strong stain I put Ascorbic acid in a stocking underneath a ziploc bag full of pebbles to...

Was my Sand filter installed improperly??

The service men came to look, and it turns out the sand in my pool isn't from the filter. The zeobrite in the filter clearly has a different look than what is in the pool. It makes me wonder where this extra sand is coming from? Long Island has quite sandy soil, but it can't be washing in from...

    Dream Home.....Nightmare Pool

We were able to swim the following weekend, and frankly the water was looking even better than before. The end of swim season is approaching, going to try the ascorbic acid treatment to get the metal stains. The vitamin C tablet trick to make sure the stains would dissolve was so cool… like...

Finding the right program for a variable speed pump.

Yes, of course I have read pool school. Even so, nothing in the pool school leads me believe that the pump is not important to prevent algae growth. The pump is critical for distributing the chemicals evenly, as well as removing dead algae and their spores that can be chemical resistant and...

Finding the right program for a variable speed pump.

Thanks Telnet, so far I also see that I don't get much skimming If I go below 1500, so I have been running at 6 hours 2100 rpm, then the rest of the day at about 1000 RPM. I haven' figured out how to program the pump for as many speed changes as you have over a 24 hour period, If I use the...

Finding the right program for a variable speed pump.

…Growth (of algae) because the pumping protocol is inadequate. Growth of algae seems to be the only measure I can think of to tell whether your pump protocol is good. (I have edited my previous post to clarify what I meant.) Knowing how one gets pressure measurements with my pump in a...

Finding the right program for a variable speed pump.

Yes, on high that thing really cranks! I see you have a cartridge filter, no use asking you how you check your filter pressure…. I am wondering…would it be better to start out under pumping and wait for growth (of alge) to occur, or start out over pumping and the cut back time/speed every...

Finding the right program for a variable speed pump.

When you say efficient, what do you mean? At 1000 rpm with my new pump, my filter's gauge reads 0, so if I run that then my filter might never give indication of when it needs backwashing. Should I take my filters pressure into consideration or not? I read the Pool School article and it says...

Finding the right program for a variable speed pump.

So I got this new Variable speed pump. It uses bunch less energy than the old Hayward Superpump, but the hayward was one speed only, I didn't need to think about it. Now i have an enormous number of possible pump protocols to choose from. Max speed for the same amount of time the Hawyward was...

Was my Sand filter installed improperly??

The installers were professional, but even the best of us have lapses occasionally. I think I 'll call the installer and have a chat.

Was my Sand filter installed improperly??

O.k. S1ngram's post reminded me that I have a new pump that is variable speed, so in fact different speeds will give very different pressures (tee hee!!). Still get a little sand in the pool after backwash, but probably the decreased pressure comes from the different pump speeds. I haven't spent...

Was my Sand filter installed improperly??

I have always used the rinse cycle (I time it for 1 minute), and definitely turn the pump off before changing valve position.

Was my Sand filter installed improperly??

I Got a new pump and sand filter to replace the old (Hayward Proseries, Zeobrite in place of sand). The filter works, the water has been clear (when I remember to keep adding chlorine:uhh:). My pressure gauge read 17 PSI when it started to operate and it returns to 17PSI post backwashing during...

    Dream Home.....Nightmare Pool

Kept the chlorine up to 4-6 ppm for a couple weeks, everything was going smooth. I got lazy last week, did nothing for the pool and BAM, the green stuff showed up. The FC at that point was actually 2ppm, proving that 2ppm chlorine is not nearly enough with CYA 50-60. It was a rainy cold weekend...

YAY! Totally professional liner guy (lets call him Roscoe) came out and made the job look so easy i was embarassed. Dream Home.....Nightmare Pool

Thanks kiss4afrog,:salut: The chiluns are my primary concern after all. The CC has been non-detectable (or well below the 0.2 ppm limit of the FASDPD test kit). I have been using that as an indication of some invisible germ outbreaks, so there isn't likely anything too nasty. But I am upping the...

    Dream Home.....Nightmare Pool

I finally worked up the patience to try locating a new pool professional that will come evaluate/repair my liner issues (see the post in the beginning of the thread). Right now, The pool looks the same as in post 54 which is pretty good, water maybe even a little clearer than that now but pics...
